Do your kids do footy tipping at school???
If so, do you agree that the school should allow it?? YES NO?? WHY?? DO you think its harmless?? DO you think it promotes gambling?? Your thoughts..... Cheers Paul

If the school ran it there would probably be a lot of fuss, but between a few classmates there shouldn't be a problem...it's not like they're throwing huge amounts of money around.

Its a class thing, i just asked they boys, they say that most of the classes if not all are actually doing it, its not amongst a few of the boys... if a kid wins they get a freddo frog or something, last year it was a footy.... no money was involved... but still id like people thoughts

I really doubt if there is anything wrong with it at all. Stupid really that people should want to even question the morality of it, its all a bit of fun.

I find it weird that some people will winge about footy tipping at school. But they won't say a thing about poker being used to teach statistics.

I'm a teacher and our school doesn't allow footy tipping among the students. The staff have from time to time, but with no money involved. The winner was bought tea at a staff dinner at the end of the season. We haven't done that for a number of years now though.
The maths teacher used a roulette wheel a few years ago to demonstrate probability and took all the betting chips of every student. He was the house. The kids were so shocked but it was a great eye opener; they understand now how the house always wins! My personal view is that it's an activity that could promote gambling later on. You can have tipping without money involved. Our society doesn't like to function like that though. My 2 cents worth. GK

I used to run the sweeps at High School for the Cup in Year 11 and 12. The last year was as school captain. Teachers and students got into it fairly evenly. We would have run a tipping comp if I'd have thought of it. No hassles at all.
I see it as harmless fun, I'd be more worried about what a kid can get up to out of school rather than at it, especially a couple of bucks a week on a tipping comp. Think of it this way. At least if they lose and never want to gamble again, it's a cheap lesson! Lumpy

My teacher in Grade 5 was football obsessed so we had a class footy tipping comp. I enjoyed it heaps and don't believe it it promotes gambling at all, I still believe gambling is a tax on people who don't understand statistics.

I think tipping is a fairly healthy, novel way to increase your interest in the game. Good for a laugh, usually.
Ive always seen tipping as more of a game in itself as opposed to pseudo gambling. Fair question tho.

At school, the IT block and other blocks I guess hold a footy tipping competition.
I think it is completely harmless. People need to get over thereselves. Our society's doomed anyway.

The kids will get out of school and then in to a workplace (perhaps after further education) which would no doubt run a footy tipping competition. They probably listen to their parents discuss their footy tips as well.
Gambling on sports is pretty much an Australian way of life. How many people do you know who don't bet any money on any sporting event throughout the year?

You've got to be kidding? Kids aren't allowed to do footy tips anymore??
We used to do it in primary school.. No money involved, the winner just got some chocolate or something.. Although everyone usually ended up with something small. If that's promoting gambling (especially when no money's involved), this country has definitely lost the plot. |
