Now that hot days are upon us.....anyone got any tips on how keep your hand from being branded on the steel gear knobs on really hot days?
Have tried putting cloth over it but that does nothing! |

Years ago I had an alloy one (turned it up myself) and used to throw a stubby cooler over it when I parked it at work on day shift in summer. Never had any branding issues from it.

Try the "good old days" of cars with steel window surrounds and vinyl seats and no AC .. many a burnt arm and bum.

Cant beat a stubbie holder. The have at lease two uses. One to keep your beer cold and the other to stop your knob from getting hot...

Yeah,
I got one of those Steel Gear Knob, vinyl seats metal window surrounds and metal seat belt clips. The gear lever leaves imprints or burns on my right hand too. Its a rare beast built in 1965 LHD from the USA. It actually came from the factory with retracable seat belts and Air Conditioning.(Alas no longer working- oh well there is still the vent windows). Its only taken out on warm to hot days so I'll try the Stubbie holder but it might be too big for my slender knob.

G'day , " Ah ,yes Chief the ol' vinyl seat burn on a hot summers day trick"..
as Maxwell Smart would have said...Dad's old Mk 2 Zephyr got me more times than I care to remember , especially when wearing shorts or bathers..Ouch.. On Maxwell Smart , I had the hots for 99 and the Cone of Silence and Not the craw , the craw and Would you believe....... The Yanks don't make comedies like that any more along with , F Troop , Green Acres and I dream of Jeannie etc.. On the shift knobs ..... Someone told me a while back that they can fail a a roadworthy inspection if an after market knob doesn't show the shift pattern on it..Is that true ? Cheers Rod.. |

You can understand the importance of it when you see a workshop situation, and a young fella has to move 1/2 dozen cars & light trucks in & out. Most cars these days have reverse in a similar position, but only 2 decades ago (when this law was more relevant) there were a myriad of positions. Autos are the same - the quadrant must show what gear, and be illuminated at night - but this doesn't have to be followed if the gear is indicated in the dash display, so you'll see a lot of cheap cars no longer have an illuminated quadrant on the T-bar. But back to manuals, if the gear pattern is not on the knob, it has to be nearby - like how the label is located in the VL Group A - you can see it on the surround below the gear lever in this pic: |

The old steeering wheels usually get hot too .. early Chryslers and maybe others, deliberately painted theirs white to combat this (supposedly) |

That’s interesting, I didn’t know that. This is my aftermarket MOMO and if it got hot from sitting in the sun I'd grab hold of the shifter boot for the first few changes and after that the air con has cooled things down enough. |

Yeh, so I got a bit impatient. Found mum's sewing machine, and after 2 hours of reading the instructions on figuring out how to put it together (and with a bit of help from youtube)....I made this...
And yeh...that's her tea towel too...shhhh Works brilliant, next step...find myself some Ford material! |

If your hand can't take it, cover it with one of your maxipads.

I used a stubby warmer on the old t5.....then mates got me a 'knob' warmer as a joke and it fit over the stick well. Once the cars were 6 speed it wasnt really hot enough for me to care.

Spoon full of concrete should do it.
People these days are so soft...and helpless.

I think you might be right but interestingly enough my EL GT doesn't show the shift pattern and hasn't from brand new. None of them ever had it.
