Default Colin McRae Dead??

News just on the Channel 9 Sunday Program...............that early reports are that Colin McCrae and 3 other people (including his 5 year old son) have been killed in a helicopter accident in Scotland. McCrae was reportedly the pilot.
He was only 39 years old. Absolutely bloody tragedy

I just read the news as well....im shocked to say the least.

Both Colin Mcrae an Richard Burns where my rally heroes back when WRC was at its best. Absolute legends of the sport, and seemed like quite nice blokes as well.

Tragic way to lose Colin, his son, and the others on the copter.

Possum Bourne

Unhappy Colin McRae Helicopter Crash

Four dead in McRae chopper crash

British former world rallying champion Colin McRae was believed to have been killed in a fatal helicopter crash at his home, police said.

Four people died in the crash at Jerviswood near the town of Lanark in southern Scotland, Strathclyde Police said.

There were no survivors and formal identification of the bodies was not expected until Sunday (local time).

"We can now confirm that four people were on board the helicopter which crashed in the wooded area in Lanark at 16:10 this afternoon," a Strathclyde Police spokesman said.

"The bodies were found within the helicopter which is owned by Mr Colin McRae. It is believed he was on board.

"However, until formal identification has taken place we will be unable to confirm the identities of those on board.

"Police are still at the scene where further searches are continuing. Air accident investigations will be carrying out a full investigation into the cause of the crash."

A police source anticipated formal identification might be made mid-morning Sunday.

McRae, 39, held a pilot's licence and travelled by helicopter on a regular basis.

The Scot won the 1995 World Rally Championship and was the runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2001.

As a big WRC fan who got to see him race at Rally Australia I feel it's a huge loss to not only WRC but world motorsport in general as this guy could drive/fly just about anything.

Default Colin McRae Feared Dead

jJust come across this:
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=265532

Not another rally great dead :(

Quote:
British rally driver Colin McRae is feared dead in a helicopter crash which may also have claimed the life of his five-year-old son, according to online and police sources.

Strathclyde Police said that the 39-year-old star was believed to be one of four people aboard the aircraft, which crashed near his country home in Scotland about 4.10pm Saturday (0200 Sunday AEST).

Police said formal identifications are yet to take place following the crash at Jerviswood, near Lanark in central Scotland.

The Times Online is reporting that it is feared that McRae's son Johnny, another child and another adult were killed in the crash.

The Times said friends of the family say McRae's wife Alison and their daughter Hollie, 9, were not on board.

The police have confirmed there were no survivors from the accident.

A statement released by the force late stated: "We can now confirm that four people were on board the helicopter which crashed in a wooded area, in Jerviswood."

It added: "The bodies were found within the helicopter, which is owned by Mr Colin McRae of Jerviswood House, Lanark.

"It is believed he was on board the helicopter however until formal identification has taken place, we will not be able to confirm the identities of those on board."

Police were remaining at the scene through the night where a thorough search of the area continued.

Air accident investigators will carry out a full investigation into the cause of the crash.

Campbell Roy, a member of McRae's management team, told the Sunday Mail: "I haven't had anything confirmed and at the moment it's speculation.

"I'm waiting to speak to the family to find out exactly what's happened."

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that its own helicopter had been dispatched to the scene along with three ambulance crews.

Strathclyde Fire Brigade also had units in attendance at the scene.

The helicopter did not come from either Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport, according to a spokesman for the British Airports' Authority.

Strathclyde Police initially said that the damage was so bad from the accident that they didn't know how many people were on board.

But it emerged that the force had been in contact with the McRae family in connection with the crash.

A statement issued later by Strathclyde Police confirmed there were "no survivors".

Police cordoned off the area, including a private road up to the McRae family house which is set in several acres of ground.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch have been informed.

McRae became the first Briton to win the World Rally Championship drivers' title in 1995 and hails from a well-known motor racing family in Scotland.

His father, Jimmy, is a five-time British rally champion and his brother, Alister, is also former British rally champion.

As well as winning the world championship driving a Subaru in 1995, he was runner-up in 1996, 1997 and 2001.
