Hi
What did you people experience to know it may be time to change jobs or get out of hospitality or both to something with easier hours and what did you do to try hang on until the time was right or you had another option. As most of you know am wanting to get out hospitality and cut back on weekend work but at moment am stuck and don’t have any other option but am working on it and taking action slowly. Just feel after 13 years that it’s time to start thinking about it and can understand why owners have put place up for sale. If you choose to stay on but no longer than you have to what is a way to leave once you have another option or start to get too much part time work and have to leave. You said before that if new owners want to keep you on that you just say thanks for offer but not at moment in a position to take it or thanks for offer but you’re only available in certain areas and ask if there’s positions in that. Just had enough and not going to make 20 years as much as it’s ok because have goals that am wanting to follow and want to do things while am able to and the hospitality is just too hard and want to get out. Can understand why so many people left after lockdown and only being back for less than a week and if it wasn’t for owners then would have done exactly that With organising a work party, how would you get chance to organise a work party when you are not either a manager or on a social committee, until you are able to change jobs and be a manager or get better hours and be able to have more time to take on more things. It seems in a small business the employer does it and in a bigger business someone different each time does it. Most ideal solution is change jobs but for some it isn’t yet a option and some might be trying to hang on just that little bit longer. Most of you know place is for sale and as much as we will miss everyone am realising that it’s time for us all to move on. Second best thing people would do is have own place or just do something different for a job but some of us are hanging out to be able to buy and not pay as much rent as to buy and be able to do what you want to place. Have started taking action but accepting that not everything is going to happen overnight. Why did older generations just deal with a job they didn’t want, do you think it’s because they grew up keeping same thing 20/30 years or is it because they grew up in a time where you repaired things and not always throw them out every time they start wearing out with jobs being one of them. Also how do you ask for better hours with same pay until you can change jobs which you’re trying to do right thing and try hang on. How do you ask for a market day off to take stuff to local market to sell. Owners neice is only 16 and she’s already following her goals and am 35 and still waiting and just trying to do right thing and hang on a bit longer. What is reason why so many in last couple years gave notice and left hospitality causing a shortage and why industry is only operating on skeleton team these days. As much as we are all going to miss each other when shop sells am accepting that it’s time for us all to move on Am not going to make 20 years but hope to make atleast 15 as much as am liking it at moment, just have goals that am wanting to follow. Plus am at stage in work life where am wanting a new chapter and just trying to do best with what have got until then. |

If you have a long history of hospitality, maybe you should consider getting your RSA and going into bar work? Meeting people is a common theme with many of your other posts, and the money might be better.

you might find, if you get along with the others and one finds a good workplace you might be able to get work with them, or if they are considering starting something new you might be able to work with or for them even. i remember one of the managers at My work left and he actually offered a few of My co workers if they'd like to work where he went next due to their skills and work ethics. good people are hard to find. (one of them did leave due to being closer to home at the new job) |

Hi
If owner wants to keep you how do you be open and say that you’re only available for certain departments or say no or leave once your plans in place if you choose to stay for a little while for example 12 months or something until you start getting too busy. Where there is a ideal time you should try stay with a employer is it the business that counts even if it changes owners for example you been at a business over 10 years and someone else takes over and you either don’t stay or leave a few months after. Or is it the employer that counts where you should try stay atleast a year once someone else took over even though you been with old owner 13 years at same place. Just have goals and was taught not to leave until atleast having another plan unless the business sells. And want to get out of hospitality altogether and don’t really want to do every weekend if at all |

Just ensure you receive your entitlements (long service etc) either from existing owner during business handover OR that they carry forward with new owners!… Check to make sure your Super is also up to date!

hi
there is a shop not far from place of work that smells and it affects one of the departments in out shop and the current owner is at point where there may not be that department anymore. as you lot may know that department is only way to get out of hospitality or cut back on that and move to something else and trying to do best until getting out and trying something else is a option and that department is only thing that can be done for now. plus trying to hang on a bit longer. the owner of the stinky shop is 32/33 and she never lifts a finger when shes there, shes busy making tiktok videos of the ex all time and she doesnt care. do you think the reason why she doesnt seem to care that the smell got the owner of work place to point of possibly no longer doing that department because her generation would just chuck a job in when they feel its time before having another plan and not bothering about loyalty unlike some like me who want to get out of a certain industry but until we can are just trying to do their best and try and hang on a bit longer. plus theres a vintage vacuum cleaner that is used to clean our department which is next door to the stinky shop and like the old electrolux vacuum cleaners. normally wouldnt care but because am wanting to buy property it might take a while before having our own and am even with that are trying to do best until things change. is wanting your own terms and things a clue that it may be time to think about moving to own space |

hi
may as well post here as what am about to ask is similar to first post. many of you know by now that am wanting to get out of hospitality and we also have a little vintage shop next door where you do something different. the owner is stopping that little vintage shop in a couple months and is only doing the cafe which also has some secondhand stuff and that little vintage shop is about the only thing that am able to do or is as close as am able to get to getting out of hospitality where you do something else. one of the reasons though probably isnt the only reason but likely one of the main reasons is because theres a shop next door the little vintage shop that has animals and there is a smell that gets into the vintage shop and the animal shop owner doesnt clean it properly and the vintage shop owner that also owns the cafe cant put up with the smell from the animal shop anymore. the animal shop owner is only 32/33 and she has pretty much driven the cafe owner out of the vintage shop next door to the animal shop which is between the animal shop and the cafe. am wanting to get out of hospitality and that vintage shop is only thing at moment that can be done until the cafe sells and the animal shop owners driven the cafe owner out. most people today especially younger generations will change jobs the minute it gets hard or they want a change and most don't stay long anymore and they don't bother about loyalty to boss or try and hang on a little bit longer and and am wondering wether the animal shop owner being 33 comes from a entitled generation who will not stay long in a job and only think of themselves and want it now and not try and hang on a bit longer and instead will just leave. what is a way to ask to stop doing the hospitality side and just do the second hand side if shop hasn't sold in 12 months and if you choose to stay on for a little longer once it sells in a way that youre not going to let either owner down. if the person taking over wants to keep you whats best way to say no or say you only want to do the secondhand/other side and youre not able to do the hospitality. with running a part time business is it just the usual you can earn so much before pension starts to be affected but income must be reported like when working part time or is there additional problems and reporting. what is a way to ask to stop doing the hospitality side and just do the second hand side if shop hasn't sold in 12 months and if you choose to stay on for a little longer once it sells in a way that youre not going to let either owner down. what would be the reason you lot think are why so many people have put their notice in for resturaunts/cafes/pubs/other hospitality places as soon as they were able to return after shutdown after only being back for a week. though not all younger people are like that and do think there are good and bad people of all ages. if anyone has got answers it would be appreciated thanks |

The best way to say something to your employer is to just come out and say it.
Be direct, clear in your needs & wants and stand firm. You'll only find out then whether they value enough to change their approach to suit or not. The worst way to handle it is to be insincere, indirect or bitch & moan to others.

Hi
Those of you that started own businesses how did you know it’s time to be own boss or upgrade to a managers position and what did you do to hang on longer. Feel like it’s time and trying to hang on and realising that starting own thing may be only way Trying to do as much as possible now towards next thing as don’t plan to stay when it sells. Would letting new owner know and thanking them work? Would letting them know you’re establishing own path and could leave at anytime and thanking them work? With old owner could you ask to stop the food side and/or cut back and let them know you’re establishing own path and thanking them work? Thanks |

Do your research. If you think you can make a go of it, have a crack............ Once you have been self employed it's very hard to ever go back "Working for the man"...

the local hardware shop took nearly 10 years to sell and the food place could take ages to sell am not going to make another 5+ years or 20 years total as already done it 14 years and it’s time to get out and try other things.

The current owner needs who they need for what they need. If you dont want to do that work, they'll just give the job to someone else. They're probably not going to restructure the business around your whims.
You dont owe a new owner anything beyond the notice period if you decide to leave. |

If you choose not to stay do you still need to give new owner notice even though you’re not staying
Can you let them know you’re starting your thing and won’t be around for long if you choose to stay until you have started your things or start getting too much work to stay, current owners nephew did that. How do you lot think the owners nephew got the deposit so quick for his shed, he does work all night barely any sleep, would that be one thing, can’t live like that. Would it likely be that the boat industry pays more than hospitality. Would his parents helped Or would it be bit of everything. Want a better shed and realising you got to pay your own way and you do right thing and suffer for that and because of wanting to buy and not rent and not earning same as everyone else of course it’s going to take a bit longer. Most would buy a place with sheds |

Owners nephew did it seems. Many do it, I did it for over 20 years, 12 hr rotating , 7 day rotating, shift sparky heavy industry. Great money. Shift penalties in this country are amazing especially if unionised. It’s Bl##dy though that’s for sure. If you want things you do have to sacrifice, get educated and get help to get a great resume and apply. During my apprenticeship we did lots of training after work at night school TAFE several days a week till 9-30pm no fun, well worth it though. Get skills unlimited work and great wages in this country for skilled workers.

hi everyone
needing someone to talk to but am ok. as many of you know the place that am working at is for sale and just being prepared that it may sell at anytime. am ok about it when the day comes that its sold and have accepted that its time for the owner to do it and some of us to move on and it will feel different but good. am planning to do electrical test and tag and other services and wondering how to get the word out there to get work. when the work place sells then wont have money other than centrelink and cant afford to live on just that and will need the money which is reason for wondering how to put the word out there and get work. how do you go reporting to centrelink if you work for yourself part time, is it the same as working for someone else where you can earn so much but must be reported. also want to ask when selling on ebay and marketplace how do you get your items to sell fast, what are tips, what do you put in description for fast sales hope everyone can understand thanks |

Advertise. Locally. Community facebook pages are a good place to start (so set up a FB business page detailing your services).

Advertising, letter drops, advertise your services on your car, community pages advertising, social media etc. Just sell yourself.
If you want someone's services where do you look them up? Hand out flyers promoting your services.
