We just got our post winter power bill and its $1030...And that's $250 cheaper than the last winter bill.....I have members on another forum from Brisbane telling me they're bills are much much cheaper.
I have fitted LED light bulbs to the lounge room and we try to use lamps instead of overhead lighting also.....Don't use A/C or clothes drier at all at the moment. Is it me or are Victorians paying way too much for electricity? Does anyone know what the actual usage prices are.....I might have to do some ringing around to find a better supplier? |

My electricity is between $230 and $280 each quarter. Last summer ran the A/C when I got home till bed time and have a little evap cooler at night. Lights are mainly energy savers but use proper lights in areas were I need them. Was running two fridges at one stage. We have a 55inch LED TV and surround sound. Cooking and hot water is on gas and heating in winter is ducted.
Try http://www.switchwise.com.au/ you might be able to save something.

I know someone who is getting a $600+ bill each quarter in an apartment with only two people. He has a big tropical fish tank and electric hot water.

Just looked at the usage graph on the bill and it was quite low around new year but it just spikes up dramatically through winter......Hopefully next year we will be able to afford a new natural gas heater instead of running oil heaters.

Those things chew through electricity. Bought a panel heater with the thought it would be cheaper then the central. Lucky I had an app that measures my daily usage and it was turned off and left after the second day.

It's your electrical hot water unit that does it. My old man has one too and his bill is 1300 per 1/4.
A friend of mine suggested switching the electrical hot water unit off when you go to work and turning it on first thing when you arrive home and having your shower 1-2 hours after dinner.

Last summer the power bill for the quarter was $340 (split system aircon running more often than not, but gas hot water). Usually is $260-270 a quarter. Metro Melbourne.

You really need to start posting up your kw/hour rates to be able to compare properly.

Here in SA
peak is 31.9c - 32.9c in summer and fixed load is 14.9c (ie. hot water) ours is set to kick in at midnight till about 7am. My last 3 bills went - - $125 credit - $95 credit - $78 charged The meter was read Monday and I expect this bill to at least zero out if not be back in credit. We had solar connected in December last year which is the only reason we got a winter bill I reckon. With a full spring and summer quarter we should stay in credit all year round, or at least zero out the power bills.

Time for solar hot water !! Need to shower in afternoon to get full advantage ..If prices keep going up then stand alone solar will will become a much better option !! It doesn't have to break even after 5 years or as long as bills drop .. Lights and Xbox etc use bugger all power ! Anything to do with HEATING drinks it .. Cooking and hot water .. We buy cars and get sfa back in 4 years !! I wouldn't worry about gov refund ! You'll be far better off in years to come ,, I'm in the elect supply and maintenance industry .. If you have a smart metter ? Buy some timer switches for things like dish washer , pool etc After living in stand alone motor home I realise it can be done !, Bushbashed you bet me to it !!

Your electric hot water set like mine to kick in at midnight? Also, how big is the hot water system and how old? The bigger and older it is the more inefficient it'll be.

Can I adjust the setting myself? Ther missus has showers in the morning but I have them at night after days work.......Might set it for 4am.......I'd say its probably pretty old.... We have natural gas line not far away from it so when I get some money i'll put in a Rinnai gas system I think and a new nat gas heater for the living room.

I'm on the same rate as LG17. Prior to fitting solar I was paying $90 - $100 per 1/4. That's with gas hot water and stove - the gas bill is about $70 per 1/4. Now with solar, I pay no bill and they pay me $300.
When I was married with 2 kids (8 years ago) it was around $350 - $400 per 1/4. I kind of miss running around the house yelling and switching off lights in vacant rooms. Cheers!

Well we think the main usage problem was two oil column heaters thru winter.....Total usage for August to november was 4960kwh!
If we get the money together a new nat gas heater will be installed hopefully. Was talking to an electrician on saturday and mentioned we even have 3 phase power fitted in the big shed up the back.....Previous owner had a lathe.... Electrician told us we would be paying for meter rental....Anyone know how much this would be per month....Its not shown on the bill at all? |
