Default List of Engine Weights and Dimensions

I was recently reading the article on the new Ford "Coyote" motor in 5.0 Mustang and Superfords Mag and noticed with interest that the "shipping" weight including water pump claimed for the motor was 430lbs (195kg) so I was wondering how that measured up to other motors that it will be compared to so I did a bit of "googling" and found a list that would be a good guide Engine Weight/Size FYI version 06.02.18 by Dave Williams .

The Coyote appears to be amongst the lightest of the bunch (so many variables in weighing an engine) and considering it's HP and fuel economy potential looks like it could help produce a great performing car

The guide is in imperial so you may need this Handy Car Calculator for weight, etc conversion

Not sure how accurate these weights are but should be ok for a rough guide
Coyote 195kg
LS1 208kg
4.6 (DOHC) 242kg ... would this be a similar weight to the Aussie motors?
Windsor 208kg
Cleveland 250kg

Wouldnt think the Coyote would be lighter than a LS1.

Just looking at specifications difference between our 5.4 Boss and the alloy block available,
an all alloy 5.4 4V would be about 40 Kg lighter and because Coyote is a lighter low deck version,
I'd expect further weight savings from lighter crank, rods and lower deck on the block.

Cautiously optimistic that a NA 5.0 Coyote might be something like 40-50 Kg lighter....
If the power and torque curves are similar to the Boss 302/315 then we have a worthy successor....

Fantastic list. Reminds me how good the old Buick/Rover 3500 V8 is.

And the new Ford Coyote weighing less than LS1, let the good times roll.

4.6 DOHC wieght would have to be alloy (since they never made a cast iron DOHC 4.6 apart from the Supercharged ones in the 03-04 Cobra)

5.4 DOHC is around 290kg I think.

M-6010-M54 5.4 Production cast iron cylinder block weighs 239 lbs

M-6010-GTWS 5.4L ALUMINUM CYLINDER BLOCK WET SUMP weighs 100 lbs

By that calculation alone, an Alloy Blocked 5.4 would be 139 lbs or 63 Kg lighter,

and then we start discussing the lower deck lighter 5.0 Coyote......

no one could ever accuse the 5.4 cast iron block of being flimsy.

For the cleveland you can almost double that weight, but id does depend on what the shipping weight includes.

I have a Ford XE Workshop manual that lists the dresses weight of 4.9 and 5.8 at 317 Kg and 325 Kg respectively.

In the Coyote thread. The end conclusion was that the DOHC FG I6 engine weighs 195kg.

buggo gt, yes the Windsor was used from EB - AU. Also appeared in XR-XW Falcons, although not really known as Windsors until the Cleveland came out.

mik, from memory, a dressed iron Windsor head weighs in at 21kg's. Those Clevo heads are a fair bit bigger so must be 25+ i'd say.

Dave Williams was an early adopter of the internet and that list has been around since the mid 90's (updated of course), he's a cluey guy and appeared on the Fordnatics listserver, look around for his Windsor V8 RX7 that he 'fangled' together.

I dont think a Clevo weighs 325kgs, thats the weight of a 460.
Info ive found says the 351C Boss is 250kg
351W is 240kg

That was the figure given in the official Ford XE workshop manual that's as thick as a telephone book.
The figure is the "wet" dressed weight with accessories.

I think its either a typo or they are counting the Toploader bolted to the back of it....

Will wait till I go to dad's and get the fiqures from the workshop manuals for the XB and XC. I know that they are over 250kg, but memory still says a wet fiqure of nearly 1000pds (I am not sure if that was including the Auto C6/FMX which are heavly lumps in their own right!)

Cant someone get on the blower to the guys in the V8 section to get this answered once and for all.

Found a place that says the "Nominal weight : 530 lbs**
- Footnotes & Remarks
** Less alt., starter, fan, belts, & air cleaner.

Always thought that they were haevier than that cant even believe the factory workshop manuals.

It is not a typo and XE didn't have top loaders....

From the book-

Engine weights:

3.3 Wet 182 Kg, Dry 175 Kg

4.1 Wet 185 Kg, Dry 178 Kg

4.9 Wet 326 Kg, Dry 317 Kg

5.8 Wet 326 Kg, Dry 317 Kg

Judging by the weight difference between a 6 cylinder and a V8 in XE was around 200 Kg,
the difference of 140 Kg between the I-6 and V8 is more than believable.

With all due respect I reckon its supposed to be 226kg/217kg.
Ill put $100 that it isnt anywhere near being 325kg

Its not 80kg heavier than a 351W, unless they all came with 2in of lead lining.
Like I said before, a 460ci big block weighs that much
6.8L V10 is about that much also

I think you are quoting figures for bare long block.
Dressed weight of 460 is over 750 lbs.

Good info here, 3rd post down. Post #10 and 20 too

460 Iron weights about 725#, alum intake drops 30#, alum heads another 70#. down to 625# in no time. 351C is appx. 550# alum intake drops about 25#, alum heads another 60#. 351W is appx 465#. How look at the power to weight ratio, 460=550Hp at 625# or 377=400Hp at 465#. Parts wise the 460 out does the 351C hands down and well produce even more torque across the rpm range. 460 and you'll be much happier

Ok, looks like Ford may have printed the wrong figures in their manual,
I knew the Lima was heavy and you've just shown that.
For a long time I thought the 351C as a long engine was around 575,
,,, maybe that was '351M/400?
