starter motors

i searched ebay for starter motors and i noticed alot of the motors from ford lasers to ba falcons all look the same

so what starter motors are compatable with the 2.0 pinto and 1600 bell housing?

and while i have your attention, if anybody has a 2l starter motor they dont need i will buy!

Well i know all 1600 starter motors are the same as mini's and mokes, but i think thats about it.

hey back to subject actually

heres a thought: i put the cortina bell housing to the cortina 2.0 engine, now the normal starter motor fits fine and contacts the flywheel but the motor will not turn the engine cuz its to weak/old i guess, & the 1600's starter motor fits but doesnt contact the flywheel.

now i found a starter motor on ebay, it was ment for a mk2 cortina but the seller sed it wont work cuz its on the drivers side and hits the steering.

now i thought the 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6 starter motors were all the same.. like the one from my 1600 :



but this motor looks like the one from my pinto?

is there a way i can identify the differnce in the 2.0 starter and 1.3?

they sell new starter motors for escorts, 1.6l and 2.0l.

i think one of my friends said something about the starter motor off a 250xflow cortina or falcon??? he has a 2l aussie rally pack.

Second thoughts is he could have been talking about alternator......

my start motor sounded like poo. so i pulled it down cleaned up the armiture and the stater with wire brush. got new brushes fitted to the stater cost $40. (could have done it my self with soldering iron brushes only worth $15) bought new solanoide for $55. now it sound sweet and could turn over my old 11 to 1 compression 2 LTR with no problems.. its not the big corty bosch starter either just the norm bosch escort one

That starter motor isn't a 1.3, its from 2.0 pinto but out of a cortina not escort.

The 1.6 starter you have is a Lucas inertia type starter fitted as standard to Escort Mk2 1300 & 1600 Manual Transmission Crossflow engines.

The other one you have is a Bosch pre-engaged type starter (0.8 HP) fitted as standard to Escort Mk2 1300 & 1600 Automatic Transmission Crossflow engines.

The one the guy is selling is a Bosch pre-engaged type starter (1 HP) fitted as standard to Escort Mk2 2 Litre Pinto engines.

You can use either of the Bosch starters in a pinto but the longer one will hit the cross member when trying to change it. So use the one you have.

Now having said all that, every escort with a pinto I have ever had, has had the shorter of the two starters and my mates cortina has the longer one. So I'm not doubting ford, but I reckon they used the same ones in the escort (1300 1600 auto and 2000) and used the longer one in the cortinas.

"greenmk2" if you wouldnt mind explaining in detail what u did to your starter.

i was told by my dad to unscrew the bolts on the side of the motor and there would be a part that rubs on the shaft but cant remember the name...anyway he said to see how worn it is and to replace if necessary.

so i went out and DAMN the screws/bolts whatever they are are bloody tight!! i got the biggest screw driver i had and i couldnt get it out!!!

any thoughts?

There's a special tool used to remove those screws. It looks like a vise with the philips head on the jaws.

While wer'e on the subject, can anyone tell me the starter I'd need for a MK2 auto 1600? It would be a pre-engaged bosch. a part number would be handy

Sterling, I have changed both the long and short starters in our MK 2 Pinto just meand taking out the engine mounts to swap over, a pain but they both fit. 2 litre Escort and Cortina starters interchange, I doubt the smaller engines will swap.

My Mini runs a Holden Gemini starter. It has the holes elongated to make it fit. A common mod amongst Mini enthusiasts.

As the Mini starter fits an Escort I don't see why one of these wouldn't fit also. Theye are much better than the Lucas starter.

You can buy brand new pinto starter for as cheap as $200 on ebay.
