Default Critical parts availability?

Can anyone confirm that there is still a legislated requirement for car manufacturers to keep a supply of critical parts for a certain number of years?

If so, how long?

7 years after the warranty expires, but that depends on the number sold

Thats based on a 3 year warranty

10 years after end of production. Falcon and Territory parts were all bought up from the suppliers in a one time buy last year.

Iys actually up to the factory they have to carry them fir a reasonable time, most high volume factories have decided to go a min of 7 years after warranty of the last model based on 3 years.

All they have to do is prove they tried to keep enough stock. If that stock runs out in 2 years then so be it. So much Ford stuff becomes obsolete within 2-3 years.

I wouldn't put any faith into the legislated obligations

look how meaningless the consumer protection ones are for the purchase of the car

If you want to be sure, you'd need to hoard your own parts

I dont think it's 7 years exactly more like the equivalent of 7 years worth if they were sold at an average rate. I know some of the parts for dealers I've worked at have run out early due to there being an almost 100% failure rate.

Was there indeed ever any legislation on this ? If so, was it state or federal.

I've been in the auto trade since 1970 & have not ever seen anything on this other than anecdotal hearsay.

If it has anything to do with the ACCC (or its predecessors) then don't worry, they have no teeth.

Try getting a lower steering shaft for an EF these days. I needed one five years ago and they weren't available then. Had to get one from the wreckers...

5 years ago your EF would have been 18 years old. dealers don't even stock parts for current models.

there is a rumour that some of the major insurers with their own crash repairers are stockpiling....

G'day , I can't believe it might come to relying on overseas knock-offs for parts one day.In the late 1980's I used to own a XE Falcon that developed bubble rust on the passenger front guard . Stupidly I opted for a non genuine replacement to save a fair bit on the genuine article when the panel beater decided the rust was too bad to fix. Bloody awful fit , a lot of tweaking , the guard was at best 80% decent. By the time it was done it was passable , not anything special and it always bugged me. If this translates over the years, geez.
My FG XR6 is already 9 years old . Maybe I ought to start stockpiling a few essentials just incase eh.!!!!!. A few weeks ago I priced the cost of a new factory alloy for her. Thinking of replacing a morerately gutter rashed one with a newey and using the g/r one as a full spare for trips..Just under $1000 made me think twice so I'll look at spending 2-300 bucks on getting the original repaired one day.

I was shocked to walk in to the local Toyota dealer a couple of years back and was able to buy brand new parts (some in stock off the shelf) for my 1982 Celica. I mean, I know that they're mechanically the same as common old Corollas and Coronas of the era and there's still heaps of them around, but come on...even the service guy was surprised. Even some smaller trim bits could be had on order.
Funnily enough the original Toyota bits were sometimes cheaper than aftermarket ones.

Insurers dont stock parts, but AAMI/Suncorp are
partners with LKQ parts supplier

I'm sure there will be parts for Falcons from specialist suppliers for many years yet, I can still buy most of the parts that I need for my XM.

Yeah but that's a different market.

Older cars have come back into rotation because of more and more 60's-80's cars restoration. Pretty much all of them need or have needed parts in the recent past. So the Damon's grew. But no doubt there was a time X-Series parts were thin on the ground, because no one really needed them.

There are places like Adelaide Spares who are wonderful for AU parts. I am of the understanding they take all the NOS and sell it, perhaps on consignment, perhaps they buy it for a reduced fee. I have always made a point of stocking up on the parts that fail or become difficult to source and I have a nice collection of parts for my AUII XR8 like complete rubber sets, rear bars, side skirts, Momo wheel & shifter, front buckets, bushes and badges etc. I am 50 yo. You younger guys don't know how easy you have it with the internet. Before that, newspapers, magazines, word of mouth and a trading post were all we had. Many times you would arrive to pick up a part to find you've been beaten to the post. If you plan on keeping a car, suss out the parts that nobody makes after the factory parts run out and start stock piling.

... my mechanic was telling me he could not get a window reg for an early model Territory !!! , based on my experience and his, I am bit worried about lack of parts , way too soon .

A few months back I had no trouble getting a new regulator with motor, front Rh door for SX/SY Territory, from eBay, supplied by a mob called Ozeparts, cost about $110-00. The part # was SXA/SYA 04-14. It was slightly different from the original Ford part but it fitted properly and worked perfectly.

It was nearly $50,000 new which you happily paid, believing you were buying into something special, supporting local businesses and buying Australian. Remember that when your pulled over by a twin turbo V6 Kia which is the new choice for Highway Patrol.
