Post Chrysler 200C Might be Coming

Chrysler is all but certain to have another crack at the mid-size market in Australia.

It’s last attempt with the Sebring sedan and convertible was a fizzer, but as buyers continue to shift away from traditional large cars into more efficient mid-size sedans the American brand is looking to get back in on the action.

It will reveal an all-new 200-series sedan at the 2014 Detroit motor show in January, based on the same front-drive architecture as the Alfa Romeo Guilietta hatch and Dodge Dart sedan.

And Chrysler’s Asia-Pacific product planning manager, Steve Bartoli, told Drive the timing - and the product - are right for another shot.

“The D [mid-size] segment is the biggest in the world in terms of revenue return – not necessarily volume - which makes it easier for it to be available in other markets.

“So that is something that is very attractive to us [for Australia]."

He wouldn’t give away too many details on the all-new car bound set to debut at Detroit, but Drive spotted a number of prototypes running around Chrysler’s Auburn Hills headquarters this week.

The pre-production mules were largely camouflaged to cloak the front and rear styling, but they clearly showcased its swoopy roofline and proportions, which will position it as a genuine rival for the likes of the Mazda6, Toyota Camry and new Ford Mondeo.

Being based on the Dart/Guilietta, it is expected the 200 will be powered by either an Alfa-sourced 1.4-litre turbo four cylinder, the Dart’s 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four or the company’s venerable 3.7-litre V6. Being predominantly designed for the American market, it is unknown whether a diesel engine will be available.

However, it is almost certain that all models will have the company’s latest nine-speed automatic driving the front wheels and helping to reduce fuel consumption.

Too many good cars in that segment to compete with.

Yeah the medium segment is too crowded and sales of anything bar Camry are pretty tiny, maybe the Mazda 6 sells ok but anything else is under 200 sales a month.
