Default Forever Legends

I got the idea from the mundine thread. Think of people in this century who will live on in sport as ledgends. I'll name 5 although I could think of more.

Mohammed Ali
Sir Donald Bradman
Wally Lewis
Peter Brock
Dawn Fraser

Add to the list everyone, I'm curious to see who people choose. If anyone can think of a reason not to have someone on the list then please state why.

Thanks everyone, I thought this would be a bit of fun.

For me a legend has to transcend sport.. On field performances etc leave the door open for a legend from every game and sport played since the beginning of time, A legend is the highest honor imho, not necessarily the best at a chosen sport.

My top 5 (in no order)
Ali
Michael Jordon
Billy Jean King
Pele
Fangio

It all comes down to how wide your knowledge of sports is, and then, depending how wide it is, it becomes more difficult.

I'd have to say (Just off the top of my head)
Pele (Greatest soccer player ever. Zip)
Sir Don Bradman (99.94, what else can you say)
Michael Jordan (Personally, I think is the greatest athlete who ever lived)
Wayne Gretzky (Almost at amazing as MJ, holds every Ice Hockey there is to hold) (PS This is what makes this list so difficult, not many people would know anything about Ice Hockey, but he dominated)
Michael Schumacher (Tough, it was between MS and AS, but I do think history will be very kind to Schuey, but only time will tell)

But there are so many that could fit on that list that I couldn't squeeze in. Geez, to tough for me

I disagree, he was a legend for what he did on the field not off it. What you are saying is Shane Warne should not be on the list due to the match fixing (weather reports), taking drugs etc.............. But yet he is still the greatest bowler in history.

Kelly Slater
Elaine Beachley
Joe Montana
Bobby Rahal
Nigel Mansell
Ted Whitten
Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele)
Wayne Gretzky
Jack Nicolas
Hermann Maier
kosta tszyu (best super lightweight and welterweight boxer ever!)

Too right. His 1989 is enough to make 10 years of cream.

Also, can we learn how to use dictionary.com?

There is no D in the first half of the word, "LEGEND".
Dammit.

No, but seriously, that puts it all in perspective. Sporting heroes are not heroes in the true sense. They are merely false idols who ultimately do it for the cash and the attention.

Dunlop was a true hero who selflessly gave his services to help others.

Of course sporting stars are not heroes but the word Legend(sorry for spelly before) is used to describe someone that will never be forgotten in their chosen feild of sport. I only chose 5 because I could have made a massive list but I wanted more people to add to it. I also think Rodger Federer and Maradona should be on the list

Could people put the name of the sport that person played because not everyone knows what that person is famous for.

Mohammed Ali (boxing)
Sir Donald Bradman ( Cricket best batsman)
Wally Lewis (one of the best rugby league players)
Peter Brock (great driver and has the record for the most bathurst wins)
Dawn Fraser ( possibly the best female swimmer Australia has ever had)
rodger Federer (I believe to be the best tennis player ever)
maradonna (awsome soccer player)

Dead right BJ. Good post.
I had the honour of having dinner with him just before He died. That man did so much IN such harsh conditions that he and people like him deserve our utmost respect. I just get sick and tired of these so called legends of sport, what the heel have they done for humanity. It is nice to see some one thinks the same way. It is because of him i have my uncle safe and sound from the second world war.
