Default colder thermostat????

has anyone tried running an 82* thermostat in there au yet?
it seems to be a pretty popular mod with ba owners .
i might try one on the weekend and see how it goes.

Had it in for a couple of years without probs. Runs good never gets hot, still hot enough to avoid wear.

@ 82 it is still hot enough to avoid this but don't be tempted to go any lower. there have been reports of 2kw gains from the lower temp. i have just put one in and no dramas so far

Because it's a popular mod with BA owners doesn't mean it'd be good for an AU.

Not criticising here, but what's the point? Isn't a 2kw gain enough on the dyno more than enough to be simple variation between runs and intake temps?

Don't get me wrong, I've got useless intake mods on my car, but I haven't heard much about this, so I'm curious more than anything else.

Is there another benefit besides that gain?

the gain has been shown time and time again and on many dynos. i agree a single test you can get a 2kw variance but if the gain is shown on mulitple cars on different dynos that proves the point. but the other advantage is less stress on the cooling system. my radiator bloke recomends an 82 degree thermostat and told me it prolongs the life of the radiator and reduces the incidence of failure of other cooling system components sich as the coolant bottle

Any idea what the correct part number for the I6 82 degree thermostat is?

From memory the old F150 82 deg thermostats can be used as well.

Mine runs a bypass thermostat so partly open all of the time ... due to the factroy LPG system needed coolant to be running through all of the time to stop the LPG freezing.

I run a normal thermostat ... but i have controlled my temps differently ... it runs cooler in winter now ... wuill be interesting to see what it does in Summer though.

I am running a ADRAD 2-core radiator (twice the thickness of the factory radiator) ... will be needing it this summer with all the load carrying I do ... the standard radiator was really average and barely coped.

I find when the car runs cooler ... it does run as well as it does when right on the normal operating temp (94 deg C for EGAS ... that's what my ute runs at) ... the cooler the engine runs at ... the more fuel it uses.

Especially the colder mornings at the moment with the big radiator ... takes a lot longer to warm up and uses a lot more LPG than when at running temp.

i'm 3 blocks from the highway and by the time i start up get the garage closed and drive to the highway i'm up to running temp with an 82 degree thermostat

The bad thing is that all of our cars have a cold start enrichment map in the ecu.The coolant temperature sensor is used to activate this system. The other downside to a cooler thermostat is that if you have a car tuned with it the car will probably ping in summer because the fan will cool the engine way too much for real life duty.Hot summer weather will see engine temperatures way higher than a tuned cold thermostat car.

My engine temps took 15 to 20 minutes to reach normal in cooler weather.

I keep hearing this doom about all the gallons of extra fuel they will use but even with the cold thermostat It still gets to temp quick because it stays shut until 82 deg and it seems to be hot enough to avoid the cold temp map which I'm told cuts off before then.
Mine is the stroker 5.6 litre and gets a constant 12.5 L/100km driving to work and I would be hard pushed to see any difference in economy from the hotter thermostat and I check milage every fill. On a trip I have been as low as
9.6L/100km. if your worried about fuel why buy a V8 I honestly dont think its an issue however opinions do vary and this is just one.

Been running an 82 degree tridon thermostat for 1.5 years in the EL falcon. never had a problem, same fuel economy as before. Prevents heat soak in heavy traffic and I always Have power on tap....

i just got back from a trip to my sisters place.i instaled one friday mornin before i left.
fuel econemy was about the same as it usualy is.i did notice it sat on the N on the temp gauge rather than its usual spot on the O,when crusing along the freeway.
stav mine comes up to temp within 5 minutes

i put one in because ,one of my thermo's isn't working and i tow a trailer for work .i don't want to risk it over heating .

performance wise it seems a little more resposive.
