Default Shift Kit n Stally

mornin all

ive decided that this saturday im Pulling Out the AUTO
to get rebuilt i cbf with a manuel conversion as i need my car back asap so im gonna get the auto built wit a Stage 2 Shifty a the JMM 3000stall converter. wont b the best on ecconomy but will pull a good enuff quatermile time for me.....

ne one got ne opinions.........

The motor isnt stock wade cam, chip torque and now has 3.9lsd gears so the shifty and the stally should work well with it

Damo - my 60" times are around the 2.324 mark

Galapogos01 - were are u from is it possible i can meet u somewere to get a ride with u to see what its like??

with this stall i might consider putting the wade 1521a even tho fuel econ wont be eny good itll be a nice weekend driver lol

You'll find that with a stally the car would be a bit "softer" for around-town driving. The stally's only two advantages are:

1) Let's hear that sick zhorst! (well, mine's sick, is yours? :P)
2) Full-on launches

Anything else & a standard torque converter is better.

As for a shift kit, it will make the box feel more awake but don't expect it to shave 10ths off your ETs. Ask Psycho Chicken about his 1/4 mile experiences with/without a shift kit.

I refute that. A stallie allows you to get revs to peak torque quicker and get the most from your cam nice and easy. I find my car has quite a bit of poke around town, and is much more fun to drive. It removes the doughy feeling that a decently cammed 6 with stock auto has.

Im not a big fan of shift kits, but if I was going all out on an auto id probably want to do something to make sure it didnt die easily. Electronic shift kits are a joke though (thats what psycho chicken used and ive tried).

I cant offer anyone a drive because my car is currently in the panel shop (someone didnt like my rear 1/4). I have some headwork, a 1521a, chiptorque, and 3.9s to go with the stall. I dont know of JMM's quality compared to others (im sure some other company make them for JMM), but I can only reflect my experiences.

What's the power range of your cam?

Since mine's the standard V8 cam, I kind of lose a little of my cam's power range due to my stally being a 3000rpm unit (semi-**** factor). Sure, for flat-out acceleration it's awesome, but when we're talking about 1/4-1/2 throttle for around-town driving, she'll just slip until the speed reached matches the revs the converter stalls to.

Overall, I'm quite happy with my stally because it helped deliver my 14.78 ET

ive been thinking about gettin an 8" stally between 2500 - 2700 smaller converter will have much better torque multiplication than the standard 11" conveter

its not gonna be a cheap ride but should be good when its all done and the chip has been reprogramed

WooOOO!!!! got my Stally today its a 9.1/2" 2700stall TCE converter
iv been told to expect it to be revy on the freeway because it has no lock up
but iv also been told to keep spare sets of tyres because off the line ill go thru them like no tomoro
i also fitted a fairly larg oil cooler as its been recomended by the guy at the transmision joint its almost half the size of the radiator and i hav fitted it between the radiatior and the aircon condenser...
the auto is currently under way at a place in Geelong its gettin a full rebuild with a stage 2 shift kit but instead of having a 6cyl Valve body the guy recomended a V8 Valve body for harder shifts and to make it stronger cant wait to get it in this saturday

You'll really notice how handy the lockup is when it's not there.

My thoughts on the 2500 stall in my car are similar to Jase's. I've found I use a bit less throttle around town, the revs sit the same as before, and the car takes off about the same. I do a lot of highway and hills driving, I've found the hi-stall to be really good with overtaking. I believe this is because when the convertor unlocks in 4th at WOT, the revs go straight to 3500 or so, then it kicks back to 2nd and has a good 1000rpm or so already built up compared to the stock convertor.

The problem with electric shift kits are they only alter the line pressure. The ECU/TCU also changes the shift timing, and the shift feel with the solenoids/clutches, so with the line pressure ramped to the max, the clutches/hubs change to the next gear before theyre out of the last gear.

How much did you end up paying? I just bought a JMM 3K stall with lockup for mine yesterday and paid $650 changeover. Also mine was straight off the shelf so i didn't need to wait for one to get made, pretty much the only reason i went with the JMM one :P

im thinking of changing the ea back to auto but with a stallie and shift kit.

how much did you pay for the shift kit?

The torque convertor locks up, and the transmission basically becomes a direct coupling (like a manual), rather than the convertor constantly slipping slightly as you drive down the highway. It's kind of hard to explain but easy to notice when you're driving a car with one.

ive driven a drag car from werribee to hoppers that hada 5500 stall wit no lock up n it felt pretty good to me alright it was abit revy but was nothin over the top so with the 2700 stall it shouldnt b such a problem

the auto will be fine as the guy is puttin a modifed V8 Valve body and doin a few other internals its gonna cost me around $3000 - $800 for the stally - $2000 for the auto
and how ever much to get the Chip retuned

then iv goto spend a further $200 or so to get the Speedo aligned for the 3.9lsd and how ever much else for two Mickey Thompson ET Radials
cant wait to get her down the quater when its all done

will the swap fix the change patterns, or make them worse, i was under the impression it fixes them... isn't there a jaycar mod you can get to change the speedo, but have the shift patterns perfect?

Swappage makes them worse in an auto, as the speedo gear impacts on the speedo *and* ECU. The jaycar circuit impacts on the speedo but not the ECU, so the auto still shifts like it should.

You would need two Jaycar speedo correctors to fix the speedo without affecting the auto shift patterns. One between the VSS and the dash, and the the other between the dash and the EEC.

OR get on speedo corrector (between VSS and dash), and use an edit (Chiptorque or CAPA Eliminator) to change the scalar for diff ratio in the EEC.

Do TCE not do converters with lockup? No lock-up will hurt your fuel economy, and increase transmission temps at highway cruise speeds (any cruise speed over 80kph). OK for a weekend car I suppose, but would be a PITA on a daily driver....
