Our 16 year old eldest is 60 hours into her learners log book ( 5 months QLD ), the majority of which have been done in my wife's 6 speed manual Corolla.
She had her first drive today in the G6E T and responsibly drove same. It's interesting to see a new driver commenting on throttle response/ auto box etc ( we did have mission debrief before we started :-) Nice to see ; mind you , she has her heart set on a Porsche or Lambo.. Steve |

My 18 yo daughter is at about the same place with her 'L' driving, she just wants an XR8 Ute, a 6 speed of course.

We have allways intended to get her an advanced driving course for her 19th birthday so will proberbly let her have a drive after that. She is my little petrol head, more so than any of my sons, and jokingly says she will not date anyone that drives an "H" word as she puts it. |

Is just Crazy, what would Happen if her Foot Slipped & she Hit the Throttle by Mistake : She would be better off sticking with Mums Corolla until she has a few Years Experiance, I mean Really do we as Parents allow our Children to have Everything they want these days? Just Crazy. |

The g6et is a fantastic car to learn how to drive in - comfortable, heaps of safety aids, and if she is being supervised all during this time, fine. It is much better and safer vehicle than a 4x4 diesel with off road tyres. As for forgetting which foot - that is what old people do. Seen it happen numerous times. OK end of angry rant.

Only reason I think its wrong, is cause Im jealous, lol. I learnt in a diesle 4x4 with offroad tyres, on the beach and 4wd tracks. That can teach you car control, or lack of, very quickly.

My kids will probably be learning in the xr6t and the gt-p. All 3 of the kids will have a very watchful eye over them, but i trust them, and they are better cars in the event of a crash than the old cars.

The 4wd was one of the most dangerous cars Ive driven. Huge body roll, seatbelts didnt really work, every rubber was shot, had about half a turn of freeplay in the steering, and power steering didnt work.

My insurance company (QBE) does not have a problem with this, in fact there was no increase to my premium whatsoever. This is in QLD. My 16 old daughter and my 14 year old son have both driven my XR8 numerous times on skid pans and will be attending specialised courses (@$395/course) as part of their learning. With my instruction, driving lessons and skid pan/specialist courses including defensive/advanced driving, I have no problem with 16 yo driving V8's or turbos. Of course when they hit their P's (WITHOUT ME SITTING NEXT TO THEM) they are restricted and maybe that's a good thing. Quote:

my son turns sixteen in 2 months and tells me he plans on learning in my cv8. I guess I'll let him as he wont be able to drive in on his p's .the cv8 is an auto and I'll have him mainly learning in a manual as I think everybody should be taught on a manual. I might let him drive my 67 fairmont for his 30th birthday if he's lucky .
when i was 13 back in 83 my oldman hired a brand new sle v8 commodore to take on holidays,we visited my grannies in armidale near tammworth and one day he took me,my brother and my granfather on the back highway where he let me have a drive for a good half hour at highway speeds, we approached road works where i had to stop, the workman holding the stop sign yelled to his mates to have a look at this bloke.I was only thirteen driving the brand new sle v8 out on the highway with a very big grim on my face.I also used to drive my mums mini when i was still in primary at age twelve. |

Plus there is far less to go wrong on the drag strip. Kind of a silly comparison really.

There is more to safety than the power of the vehicle FFS...
Although I do think it's pretty stupid that right now (I've got 8.20 hours experience and had my L's for 2 weeks) I can jump in a Shelby GT500 and go for it, but once I have had my 120 hours driving, done a test to show I can drive well enough to drive solo, I can't even drive a 260ci V8 with less power than my 2V 250 ute, which I can drive |

reminds me of my learners experience. dad lost his licence just as i got my Ls so he couldnt teach me, so he arranged his mate to take me out. every time he did was a different car. first was an XB GT coupe that blew my dad away. he was sort of shocked(slack faced) as we drove away from my house. this thing was mental. then it was the brand new statesman V8 of 2005 for a few weeks(the guys daily) before a HDT Brock VL 5.0l manual, and then finally a 93 mustang convertible. each car enabled me to respect that they where high powered machines and as such, need to be treated with alot of respect. this is reflected in my perfect driving record of no accidents and unfortunaly one speeding fine, but we're all human and that was 3 yrs ago! so really, its not fair to generalize every 16 yr old as an unsafe driver. just need to educate them properly. if theyre lucky enough to have the chance to drive nice machines, then let them. thats the owners/parents choice.

In addition, the vehicle is equipped with dynamic stability control that would catch any moments when she runs out of talent. (Note: until only a few weeks ago, DSC was unavailable in the Corolla at any price.) From my perspective, the G6E has a five star crash rating, so if we have the big moment (and God willing we won’t), we have a better chance of walking away from the incident. For the record, her foot has slipped off the brake pedal once when we were parking the car at the local library. She caught it pretty quickly. I think that it something that all learners have done at some point in time. Yes, I do have extra grey hairs from teaching both my daughters how to drive, but any parent will tell the same story. |

My First car when I turned 17 was a 351 XD with LSD etc... I had to learnt o respect that torque or I would have been a statistic.
Nothing wrong with kids and grunty cars, my kids paddock car is an EA, they are 3. 5 and 7.

My daughter has about 70hrs up now and today she drove the pursuit ute she said it was easier to drive than the subaru impressa I told her not to get used to it as when she gets her "P's" the subie is all she has to drive. Both cars are man. and the experience of a different car is a good thing she noticed how the 8 will pull smoothly from low down where the subie your changing gear. Probably the slowest trip the ute has ever done.
