For me the biggest day on the australian calendar is ANZAC DAY. It embodies everything about what makes us Australian.
I'll be doing what i do every year and pay my respects at the footy when the bombers destroy the pies.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. If you can read this message thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English of your own free will THANK A SOLDIER! It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag. To all the brave men and women who have dedicated or given their lives to protecting this country and it's freedoms: Lest we forget....

Finally did Dawn Service.. would have been better if it weren't so early !!
It was a huge crowd, I couldn't even get anywhere near the concreted areas. What I did like was how quiet and respectful everyone was. Even during the speeches no one said anything and it was a quiet, orderly departure..except for some knobs on harleys that thought they needed to warm their bikes up for 15 ninutes then blast off down the road. Anyway, Lest We Forget. |

Just saw the same pics on the Age website. As usual with Wars, not long after most people are pals again and wonder why they spent so much in the way of people, time and money on the whole episode.

I have been to a few dawn parades but I wasn't able to make it this morning.
I have a great respect for the ANZACs and everyone else who served and/or died for our country.

i've been attending the dawn service every year since i was 12. nine of those years as a soldier. this morning i watched as my 13 year old son participated in his first as an air force cadet. it made me so proud to watch him celebrate the lives and mourn the deaths of these , the greatest and bravest of australians.
LEST WE FORGET.

I always find ANZAC day to be incredibly moving, and rarely manage to keep a dry eye. Rememberance day likewise.
I have family who have served in various wars, as have many other forum members. Men and Women who have served their country. In the face of insurrmountable odds, the true diggers spirit was born. Sadly we increasingly do not see it, and I beleive it is ANZAC day that reminds us of what it is to be Australian. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest we forget.

Lest We Forget.
On a side note, at the Brisbane parade today, I noticed that marching a few groups behind the Vietnam Vets were the Viet Cong. Now correct me if I am wrong, but I would doubt that our Vietnam veterans would have been too impressed about that........

Yeah i just got home from melbourne then.. I was in the Melbourne March with my school. I am in a cadet band (school army thing) and i was the CUO/Drum Major AKA Person telling everyone what to do and what to play, i was wearing the red sash at the front if anyone saw me . Beside that, it was very moving and i have done it 6 times now and love it every time i do it. Everyone there is great and really nice and you get a smile from every person there and a pat on the back. Its hard work i have to admit but its nothing for what the anzacs did for us.
