My daughter is 13 and the answer is no - at this point.

I recommend you do get familiar with that sort of thing though, otherwise you will always be on the back foot with what they are up to.

My daughter (number 1) is 17 and I have blocked myspace on our router. None of my kids whilst under 18 will hace access to it.

My wireless router logs all of my kids web site visits and all of their MSN and email conversations.... Big daddy IS watching.

There was an article in today's Herald about the huge increase of Myspace predators.
Not to mention the associated garbage they will come in contact with.

Definatley no Myspace but MSN I would be cautious. If it were me, I'd block both and give her a prepaid mobile. She could still communicate with friends but no strangers communicating with her.

Lmao.

Comming from a 17 year olds point of view msn not a problem I've been using it since I was 12.

Myspace is just a website for 16 year old guys to put up topless photos of them selves and 16 year old girls to put up pantsless picutures of them selfs.

Both are safe as long as you teach them not to give out personal information to people you don't know.

LOL...thats probably not what they want to hear, but its the truth.

Myspace, what a waste of time. Nothing other than a place for people to make themselves feel better about themselves and crap on about how many friends they have, even though they have never met half of them.

You're a guy obviously, bit different for girls me thinks. My sister who is 18 has been using myspace for about 2 yrs and she still shows me some of the messages that guys well over 30 and 40 send her and its just not right. MSN isnt too bad it seems pretty safe dependss what type of daughter you have really

As an 18 year old and having used msn and myspace i'd say:

MSN: 15+
Myspace: 17+

MSN isn't bad, as it is up to the user whether or not they want people knowing stuff about them, although myspace if u accept another person then they are free to use whatever info is on your page.

I think making MSN/Myspace an 18+ thing is going a bit far, after all it comes down to the person using it. If your kids aren't even allowed to use MSN which is really quite minor compared to alot of real world activities, i guess you just don't trust them.

I've prob been using the internet to chat to friends since the internet existed - my parents told me don't talk to strangers or give out any personal details, which makes it quite safe. It's not as if teenagers are a high target for identity fraud or they have credit card details to be stolen.

I assume kids would be more likely to get up to more than they're spose to if the computer was in their room or something, so i'd probably have the computer in a family room where it can be seen what they're up to.

Those of you saying your kids aren't allowed to use myspace until 18 seems quite funny to me - don't you think its going a bit far? It seems to go in the category of parents not letting their kids eat tia maria Tim Tam biscuits because they contain alcohol, or letting them watch the simpsons because it sets a bad example... There's caring for your kids safety and there's not letting them experience life for themselves - big difference.

im only 18 but i would allow msn more then myspace. i have guys in my tafe class that sit there lookin for hot chicks on myspace jus to perve at pictures.
fair enough they are hot but it shows how easy it is to get info on people.

hell iv had friends tell me a tiny amount about someone and within minutes i can tell them their address their phone number. often their school, their parents names, their friends. do it mainly to girl friends that are chatting up weird guys. so i do it to freak them out that i know more about the guy then them :P

as somone else mentioned. you can get routers or just little programs or even usb sticks that record everything. they can record every keystroke if you really want.

I am also 17 and I second that. Myspace may be a little too open but you can set your profile to private so no one except your friends, who you decide to add, can have access to it. msn you can only talk to peoples who have your e-mail address. and you can keep a track of ALL conversations on msn.

Edit: a couple of people beat me to it. I'm not a very fast typer.

Working in IT myself, I would say yes, if I had kids. The condition is that I would be standing over their shoulder watching what they do.

i'd say hell no to myspace, as it is a preditors play ground ...

but MSN is fine ... u can keep a track off all her cantacts, and only people that she know's will talk to her ... unlike myspace were she's open for the world to view, even if she puts her profile onto Private, i still wouldn't say that it's appropriate until she's about 17 ...

but MSN is completly safe, as long as you keep records of her convo's and monitor who she has on her contact list ... eventually her contacts will Grow, but then you sit down with her, and go through them all and get her to tell you who they are, if they are a stranger then get her to delete them!! or get ur approval before adding/accepting them!

HAHA it's not you're fault john, u type with two fingers :

me 2 so no worried hahaha ...

I wouldn't let my daughter on myspace because its full of tryhard ****ars. If she avoids a few pedophiles (spelling?) as well then thats a bonus.

MSN, yes. Maybe keep an eye on it though. MSN is fine as she has to give her e-mail out, but predators go on mini game websites, myspace and what not to get their e-mails.

Myspace. I would say no at her age, but if she's mature enough and you actually talk about it, perhaps. When you're under 16 on myspace, you're profile (page that you put your info on etc) is private. This means, when someone goes to her page that isn't in her friends list (which she has to allow, so it'd only be her friends, hopefully), they can only see a thumbnail image of her, with details of age and location (you don't have to put a real location either, or you can put something like Australia instead of a precise location).

The only thing is, even if their profile is private, people can still send them messages. On myspace, messages are sent to an inbox, much like an e-mail, which no-one else can see (whilst comments are displayed on the profile page for all friends to read). This is where predators usually send things to girls. From what my female friends have shown me, they can be from full on messages, to subtle things (even trying to be 'friends' first) and giving out their addresses etc.

Perhaps if you have a close relationship with your daughter you could monitor what she looks at/talks to and trust her not to open messages from people she doesn't know (much like spam e-mail). There are millions of people who have non private profiles however (including porn stars etc), so it will open up a lot of things to her if she goes looking (no nude, violent or offensive pictures are allowed on the site), including language in which the "c" word seems to be the favourite of kids these days.

Try to simplify it and give you as much info on the actual thing as I could, hope it helps!

Ok recording conversations might be getting close to the line.

Admittedly I dont have kids, but it seems to be not that far away. At some point you have to trust your kid. Like the others said, no to myspace as its just a waste of space.

But MSN should be fine. IMO there are no guarantees when it comes to the internet.

it's not a spyware that you need ... open installing MSN it will ask you if you would like to save your Chat Logs ... select YES ... and hide it in a folder she wont find!!

there are also spyware programs, that u can use, if u have two computers and they are somehow connected, this allows you to monitor her screen without her knowing .. they use it at our school!

i think definitely yes to msn.
and monitoring conversations isn't necessary needed as long as she doesn't start gettin all suss.
as said put the computer in a room where you are most of the time.
msn is pretty safe as long as ya kids relise there are weird screwed up people everywhere in the world and they shouldn't talk to them.

its a bit different for boys as there is less 40 year olds chatting them up. but iv always considered my self since a very young age smart in that people are odd balls the second they seem suss them off. and iv never had trouble. and iv been on the net constantly since i was 12.
but then again iv been a regular at the pub since i was 13 and still know the original guys that work behind the bar :P

Im 18 and Both are harmless...

MSN - 13+ no worries
Myspace - 15/16 no worries.

At the end of the day, on either of the two all you/your child has to do is block or delete someone they don't know.

I have never had any trouble on MSN and i have used it for the last 5-6 years, and on myspace i have had a few people i don't know but they just get added as friends and if they tried anything weird you only have to either delete their comment or block them.

Hell on myspace you can lock your profile so only friends can enter it.

i really don't see what the fuss is about.

just talk to ur daughter about privacy and what not to tell people ... my brother started trusting people too much so i had to cancel his account for a few months ... but now he is totally aware of the danger in that!
