Exclamation Snakes on a Plane QANTAS !!!

FOUR baby snakes grounded a Qantas plane in Melbourne after they made a doomed bid for freedom during a flight from Alice Springs.

The four baby Stimson's pythons were found to be missing from their container on Tuesday when the flight arrived in Melbourne.

The 15cm snakes were among 12 pythons in a container in the Boeing 737-800's cargo hold, a Qantas spokeswoman said.

Two flights had to be cancelled while staff searched for the missing snakes, but they could not be found.

The plane was fumigated and returned to service the following day, the spokeswoman said.

Stimson's pythons, which can grow up to one metre long, are not venomous and live in Western and central Australia.

Qantas have not been the same for a couple years. Those recent mid air incidents really have not helped, and now this. Job cuts, missing snakes. Today I heard they may begin Qantas from scratch which really would be bad. First we lose Ansett and now 10 years or whatever it is Qantas is looking bad. Although Ansett was a different kettle of fish.

Qantas should of never sent maintenance over seas. They have gone from safest air record in the world to nothing. within a year. I give them 2 years and they will go under. I hope this is not the case because virgin blue seriously sucks.

The new Tiger Airlines is o.k I flew them to and from melbourne. Absolutely no frills, not even a pay TV, but the planes were brand new and comfortable.

Qantas was doing feasibility studies into overseas maintenance, and only 2 planes were sent over. It was also done as a posturing exercise to put a halt to the string of engineers' strikes which were costing millions every day, and the threats of the union were abated by the timely reminder of dipensibility of staff. Engineering at Qantas, is undergoing changes to improve efficiencies and help it transition from when it was government owned to being a public company. A lot of the extra labour is still there today from its former days of its equivalency to being a public service. Qantas will survive. It has not cancelled any of the 787 planes which are crucial to its strategy; will see it become a premier airline once again. Whilst V Australia is currently hurting the pacific route sales, Qantas' newer fleet which has endurance for point to point travel will see a whole new status for the airline, back to its former glory days. Whilst Qantas has cancelled orders for 4 A380 planes, its long term strategy is to put all the A380's at Jetstar. Jetstar is rapidly emerging as a holiday destination carrier like HNL etc. Soon, it will commence LAX in the A380, but before then Qantas needs its new fleet from Boeing. Additionally, if Boeing build a replacement for the 777 under the guise of the 787-10, Qantas (and Emirates) have firm orders for approx 150.

Ansett went bust because they allowed the union to ride rougshod over them, such as having 3 flight crew in a cockpit that only requires 2, yet an inability to make the engineer redundant meant he had to sit and watch from the observers seat, whilst being paid in full. Overstaffing, poor maintenance and a union that crippled restructuring spelt the death of Ansett. How it lasted so long is beyond comprehension.

This type of post has no place on AFF! Imagine a well thought out, well writen, well researched post! In the Bar!!!
Ansett went as long as they did because the backers were trying to save it, with the help of the Australian Government. If they had folded earlier, some of those backers may have walked with a little of there money retained. Instead, in a desperate bid to save it, all they were left was a bitter, union induced, taste in their mouths.
Well said LTD!
