Default Internet access with no phone line??

G'day all, just got my optus home phone bill. Line rental jumped to $50 a month from $31.77. Thieves.

I currently have ADSL internet. How can I still get internet access and get rid of my home phone line??? I am NOT in a capital city, so wireless is not an option.

Also who can recommend an internet plan. OPTUS are about to lose me as a customer.

Check if you have cable avaliable. You can run VOIP over this so you still have a home phone.

Yep, either Optus cable (best) or just switch to telstra budget line rental ($18) and continue using skype.

IINet have a great package 49.90 a month for up to 24Mbit speeds with 6gig and VOIP included.

The house I am in now does have a foxtel line, but we are not subscribed. Reading the telstra website you must be subscribed to foxtel.

Am I reading this right?

Through ULL it is now possible to have a copper line to your house (for ADSL) without having to pay for a telephone connection.

However, will telephone lines available for $20-$25 month I am still unsure about giving up the security of the good old dial tone down the copper line for emergencies....

That's surprising. My understanding was one of the provisions given to Telstra by allowing other ISP to use their exchanges was that they had to charge line rental. Therefore it wasn't possible to have an ADSL connection without also paying line rental (which makes it way back to Telstra).

Never heard of ULL, but how are they getting around that?

Mate, I am with Optus, I have mobile, home phone, Foxtel & Internet Cable with them. So far, no major issues, however in response to your query, Optus have just introduced a new Home Phone/Internet plan. For $69 mth you get:
  • Unlimited* local & national long distance calls.
  • Unlimited* calls to Optus GSM mobiles
  • Line rental included.
  • 2GB Broadband usage.
I have upgraded to this package for $89mth which gives me the extra 7GB. Sounds like a pretty deal to me...I will reserve final judgement for a couple of months after I have used it.

Check 'Virgin Broadband'.

ADSL and VOIP phone all totally wireless, no line rental (one can only dream of a world with Telstra). It's due to launch in a week or two.

Not quite. It just changes the way that the installation goes down. Basically you need a fox line that has been active at some stage in the recent past.

If not, bigpond/telstra/foxtel just need to do something before setting you up... not sure if its their end or your end. Normally (with active line), its plug the stuff up and you're online.

BTW cable rocks... and there's talk of more upgrades to the cable service soon.

Just note that foxtel cable = tesltra bigpond only. Optus cable = optus internet only.
