Default Server Crash

Good afternoon

The server is now back up after a period of 28 hours.

Without going into massive detail about the issue it basically amounted to a server kernel failure that resulted in a corrupt installation.

This necessitated the installation of a new OS on a new RAID array and then a rebuild of the old array so that the data could then be copied back.

Consequently we have some new software sitting at the back end of the server which might potentially cause some issues over the next few days but we will address these as we go.

Some things are not fixed yet - the email server still has some bugs to be ironed out and some back end configuration still needs to be completed so there will likely be a few restarts of the apache server during the next 48 hours or so.

The data should be up to date as of the crash yesterday although the odd post might have got lost in the crash and it is probable that some user profiles will be corrupt as well. Just PM me if you have an issue within your profile.

Thanks to those who offered their assistance throughout this process.

Cheers
Russ

If you go to the new posts section they appear to be a day ahead of themselves.

I thought it was worthy to tell you all the reality of something like this. Russell and I realised this was down fairly early after it occured. He was out and I had a phone call from an AFF member. Once he arrived home he started speaking to the USA night shift who host the site (and let me tell you it was chaos!). Russell is a perfectionist and his fustration was enormous.

Things did not go smoothly and he has been up all of last night despite the fact that he has a business to run and had 2 very important appointments today. His morning one he attended but the second one he postponed until Monday so he could spend more time in front of the computer sorting this.

This has been a 'one man show'. While I can feed him and make cups of tea, he is the one that has worked to put it back together. I could not move him from the computer room.

He is being forced to have a small break and relax but will be back on tonight and no doubt all day tomorrow trying to fix things as they appear corrupted. Please just have a little bit of compassion and consideration as Russell is the only one and doing it all on his own and he needs to take some breaks. Patience folks!

Glad we are back. Bit of a rough night for many people.

Regards
Gaela

WOW! That is a very serious server crash indeed. The Raid Array is definitely the last thing you need to go! and worse still, is trying to get it back up and running so quickly.

Well done Russ. What a mammoth effort! I am surprised it is even up!

Good to see that just as you are looking after the AFF community, someone is looking after you and forcing you to take a break! Great work Gaela

You the man Russ.
I thought I was going insane!!!!!
I even thought someone had banned me, and as I don't know what happens when you get banned I thought it would be something like what was going on.

man talk about a hard night!!!!
I was trying it every 10 mins or so.

But good on ya guys. I asked my wiz kid brother in law what the Raid array is and what has happened and he tried to explain it to me and it was bringing tears to my eyes and melting my brain just listening to what he was trying to explain what may be going on. I had to beg him to stop!!!

But great work seriously guys. Just shows the level of commitment some have for this awesome forum.
