Just reading a few threads on AFF and thought this might help a few people:
bought - past tense of the verb to buy For example: "I bought a newspaper at the newsagents. " brought - past tense of the verb to bring For example: "She brought her homework to the lesson." |

Their, They're, There.
Too, to, two. were, where, we're. You can't fight 'em mate. Some people just don't care about spelling as long as their message gets across.

No mate, just an observation. I must be delusional because I don't remember typing that it was causing me any grief.

Look we all have irks on this & most other forum sites, about the atrocious spelling & gramma that is tryped (yes TRYPED) from the keyboard. One member on here seriously gets me every time he posts due to not using a caps lock or shift button at the start of a sentence. Or a user who never uses the full stop, which makes the post SOOOO hard to read. Most gramma & spelling I mistakes I can oversee but, in the main most posts are pretty legible. I make some mistakes myself, but some people just dont understand that firing out a post with none, you just can't read. But it’s hardly posting about.
If you don't remember posting that, either you had alot to drink, or change your password NOW! Not to mention, this is the wrong section to post this in anyway.....

If you want to see really awful grammer and punctuation go read read some of the adds on ebay!!
No full stops, commas, HUGE writting which takes more then a screen to read, not to mention the number of items in the wrong section of eBay... Like cars being sold in the car parts section.... or car parts in the cars section.... or cars in the truck section.... or in the WRONG country! or people putting .... NOT XA/XB/XC/XD/XE/XF/GS/GT...

This was supposed to be a fairly light hearted thread and just a bit of a pi$$take. I find it amusing that some people jump on here and seem to think I've insulted them. |

I had a lady at work that used to use the word pacific instead of specific.
They "pacifically" asked me to tell you to do this or that. Nice lady though.

I can't help myself, I need to correct it. I can let it slide a few time (verbally I mean), but if they keep doing the same mistake it just gets to me. Like every night at work, the caller says the suburbs name wrong...... THERE IS NO 'D' IN THE SUBURB NAME FFS. IT'S 'TH'
Stuff like that really gets to me

In before the lock.
Loose - not tight. Lose - not win. Looser - a loser who can't spell. |

They're the folk who, with their industry knowledge bought the equipment from the shop over there and then brought it to the work site.

oversee - verb: Supervise (a person or work), esp. in an official capacity For example: "I oversee all new trainees at the factory." overlook - verb: Ignore or disregard (something, esp. a fault or offence) For example: "I try to overlook some of the errors made by the trainees." Sorry Conundrum, couldn't help myself. In all seriousness, I can't stand bad spelling and grammar when it is out of sheer laziness but I do try to remember that some (or most) of the people on here that make genuine spelling or grammatical errors usually know a hell of a lot more about cars than I do. I think I would much rather be able to strip down and rebuild an engine or replace my own diff bushes than know the difference between bought and brought.

Um, it's grammar, not grammer or gramma.
The use of 'then' is creeping in when 'than' is intended as well. And the use of "aswell", when "as well" is correct. Aswell. Is that something that happens in your underpants?

I'm with most people here. I'm 20, so the majority of people my age (god I hate it) spell everything on Facebook wrong. Texts are way out, emails, notes for work purposes are also wrong. People don't know the value of the English Language. It annoys me because I get thrown into the category of those that do not know how to spell and use basic punctuation.

The most common one I see is people mentioning LPG in their car ads.
90% of the ads say DUEL fuel..... Not a big deal by any stretch of the imagination of course. Just an observation. |

But really, not everyone has the same level of education. That's just the joys of living in society. If people wanted Grammar lessons I doubt they'd come here for them.. /move on

Intelligence takes many forms.
I know some people who are very switched on, but have the most atrocious grammar. For others its laziness; type as fast as they can and never bother to read back over it. Then there are those for whom English is their second language. Often they'll never wrap their head around the minefield that is English grammar. People say English is the most difficult language in the world to learn. It’s actually one of the easiest to learn to a very basic level, but to truly master it, being a non phonetic language and with all its crazy rules, is incredibly tough for many people.
