I have had stuff scanned incorrectly, but I keep correcting them at the counter instead of AFTER I paid. So.. yeah... I'm too honest.

Most grocery store policies are if a product scans the incorrect price and you have already paid for it they will refund the full amount. Thats why if you notice at the checkout say nothing and go to the service desk afterwards and you will get a full refund. :

Being a checkout chickout for 5 years.... (yes not something to be overly proud of but it pays for my cars) i've had numerous items given to customers for free... and if it scans incorrectly and you mention it before the end of the transaction...you can still get the item for free... you don't have to wait around and get a full refund etc.

And another interesting thing where i work (i'm not sure if this applies anywhere else) if the checkout operator asks you if you know the price of an item that isn't scanning, the operator has to accept the price you tell them (within reason of course). So you can say something that really is $8.99 is $8 something, and 9/10 operators will enter $8 as the price... as so forth..

Yes its played on by dishonest people, but not much can be done about it

Its the scanning code of practice for retail supermarkets

I got a dvd player once, from myers $350 for free. I had to wait for the manager and then have to remind him of what the sticker says on every one of his tills. Needless to say the big $200.00 sign on the pile of DVD players was taken down and put on the "other" pile of cheaper ones.
The funny thing was. a sales assisttant had explained all the features to me and then told me thay were on special for $200.oo

Yep, all supermarkets must do it.

I'm the person who puts up all the tickets and is responsible for the pricing integrity in my store. (Only for groceries and perishables, "fresh" food departments are responsible for their own)
It's usually caused by someone not taking an old special ticket down, or if the fillers put a product in the wrong place, I can't find the ticket for it to change it, so I throw it out, thinking we don't have it.

But if you consider that my store alone has about 50,000 different items on the shelves, all needing tickets, and some multiples of tickets, and I am the only one looking after these things in my 38 hours, then it's bound to happen occasionally.
Last week our scanning policy total for the week was $27. Mostly produce.
Considering we take ~$480,000 a week, thats quite acceptable.

I must admit that having inside info on the specials and ticketing and such, I go into other stores and look out for these things especially.
Even if I don't need them, something for nothing (especially when you work for the company you're targeting) is great!!

I work in in the grocery dep. of a supermarket part time and occasionally get disputing the price of things. Had people argue with me at the registers that I'm wrong so I take them to the item, and it turns out they were looking at the wrong price.

There was something in the paper either yesterday or the day before about this... They went to various stores and selected items at random noting the shelf price. Proceeded to the checkout and apparently the discrepancies were very worrysome.

Yep. I got a carton of smokes from Safeway. The manager tried with "look, how about a compromise and pay only ˝ price" and I said no way. He got smart with me lol telling me I was trying to get something for nothing and I hit back by pointing out to him that it was THEIR policy to hand over the item for free if it scanned wrong and that no where did I see smokes being excluded from that policy. He wasn't happy at all but I did get the carton for free.

Here's one for ya. Not exacltly a scanning issue, but still some free stuff.

Many years back when I was in the Air Force on deployment at the USAF Clark Air Base in the Philippines many of us purchased a heap of big dollar items at the Base Exchange which is a massive department store on the base.

Due to everything being duty free the price savings were incredible and we bought up big on push bikes, stereos, scuba gear etc. Most of us spent around $5000 each.

At the time we were there a nearby volcano (Mt Pinatubo - only 6 miles from the base) was threatening to errupt and actually did so only 9 days after we left completely destroying the base.

As a result of this all of us guys who bought stuff on our credit cards from the store were never charged for the items as all details etc were lost in the volcano eruption.

Another bit of info that might interest all you car nuts was the price of cars on the base (there were 3 car yards on the base itself).

You could buy brand new Transam Firebirds and similar cars for $10,000 because all the tax and stamp duty etc were non existent. Bargain.

How awesome is that. :-)

Thats actually illegal. The scanning policy for alcohol and cigarettes is not that you get it for free, but that you pay the lower price.

I work in the biggest supermarket in vic. (or so im told) they pull almost a million a week, and in the supermarket itself, if something is in the wrong place on the shelf you get it for that price (when its cheaper, no-one disagrees when its more expensive) but in the liquor dept where i mostly work, if it scans deerer(sp?) you get it for the proper price regardless. no arguments... one lady wanted a $190 bottle of chandon (i think) champagne because it apparently was where a $4 bottle of red was... it is not our policy to give free or cheaper stuff, but if its the law... might have to ask the boss?...

Worth $59.00 when this happened.

Then why did the manager give it to me for free and why didn't he say that the wrong scan policy didn't apply, especially since I bought up the fact that it was not written that smokes were excluded ..... Maybe it's the policy now but I got that carton for free.

And that happen to me too aswell (sort of) The girl had scanned the packet, then I asked for a carton aswell and instead of scanning the carton, she scanned the packet again. But unlike my free carton fiasco, I actually made her aware of her mistake. It's one thing if something happens under their policy, but this was a simple mistake of wrong item scanned and I had to be truthful about it.

Not at the supermarket...

Once I ordered KFC, it cost around $8, and I gave them a $50, and got $60 odd dollars change.

My mate on the weekend ordered something with a 600ml Pepsi, he got the Pepsi before his food, went back for his food and got another 600ml Pepsi for free.

Sorry, but your incorrect there.

There is a Supermarket code of practice, or some crap like that...

It is up to the supermakert to opt into and accept and use this policy, otherwise, the supermarket can make their own policy....

This was quoted as well on Today Tonight a few weeks ago....

Yep. Customers don't believe me when I tell them this in the Liquor dept at my work, until I show them the code with that part highlighted.

Twice at differant Bunnings stores i have bought a solid core door but have only been charged for a hollow core. The way i see it, if they are too lazy to walk around and scan it then i will say nothing!
