Retail and the quiet end of financial year

Bejesus I have never seen it so quiet. run a small footy merchandise store in the biggest centre in Bathurst, up to and ending of last week saw steady sales, but this week has dropped away to 20% of what we were doing. tax time is usually quiet but never as much as this. anybody else seeing this trend ?

For the retail side of things I can't see it being quiet at all, but if you work in parts, workshop, trade, things get quiet as no one wants to take on work so close to end of financial year. Should pick up in a fortnight one would hope.

Hope your right . never seen this before in a few different retail outlets. selling footy jerseys 1/2 price one would think may get it going , but not this week lol

Not so down in Melbourne, once again the tradies getting in before EOFY has resulted in great automotive sales where I work

i put it down to noone really has much money to play with last few months

Just wait until the Chinese lose the spring in their step, then we will be in trouble.

So many small business owners closing shop over here in the west as greedy landlords raise rents and people tightening up their spendings.

It's not over yet.

We have just had one of our busiest EOFY periods, mainly dealing with government departments, councils and schools for promotional products.

Our department alone sold half a mill in stock over the last 6 months. However it must be dead at work as the boss usually asks me to work extra on a thursday and today he just said come in at normal time. This is now where I worry if I will be employed at christmas or not. I work in sales, and targets have to be met, which is easy during lead up to July and the 2 months heading into and the month after christmas, however with 5 staff on the floor, during these quiet times is going to be a struggle me thinks.

Just has busiest month in 21 years in May and biggest one year turnover in 21 years. But in saying that I know of many people and business doing nothing............

We were quiet from feb, then half way through june we had a massive upturn.. i'm now doing between 8 & 20 hours a week OT..

things have dropped off at work, but we are 70k ahead of budget. The restaurant went dead but bar has picked up. Plenty of functions booked for next week which is rare, so we are doing well. Lead up to eofy we saw an increase in food and beverage sales but a massive decline in occupancy to 28%.

I work in logistics and work has just gone nuts, looking at hiring another forky as a casual. Just got a nice Coles contract too, which makes another 10 or so hours work for the week.
I don't stress about being unemployed.

Cheers and thanks for the input . interesting to see the different areas of business at eofy and the impact it has , not having been trading last year I had no figures to compare . guess it comes down to the needs v,s wants with peoples disposable income to where they spend it.

My biggest clients are in construction.
They are laying people off at a steady pace.

Turnover down to about 35% of normal.

I work in manufacturing making products for the construction industry. We have been getting steadily worse for months.

I also own a retail shop and though it isnt getting any better its not getting worse so thats some kind of positive I guess.

I previously worked for an electronics retailer who went bust last year, that industry has improved. I now work for a small retail bank. We have had a quieter year than normal but still above projections.

Some businesses are going gang busters though. Coffee shops/fast food shops and gyms in town are killing it. Many of our local travel agents are doing well also. Car yards look like they are struggling. A few small clothing stores have closed down.

EOFY and election looming .....
Happens most times the two clash close
Then throw in all the other hardship issues out there

Well it happened :(. Business as usual, boss hired too many people during the "good" times and now I am down to 3 days per week work.

One would think being part of a large Retail 'Corporation' (as one customer put it), there wouldn't be a need to 'slash' hours at this time of year. However, managerial staff in the clouds have decided cutting hours of EACH person by 30% would be a good thing to do. Not like it was hard enough in a small shop (a multi-billion dollar company though) with 'normal' hours

That's why I always resist hiring new people. You hire someone, and the government/unions/etc think you're obligated to keep them for life, regardless of the market.

the wife works at a large well known store, and theyve been slashing everyones hours for months. They would cut back more, but have to follow proper procedure due to the union negiotiated award regarding how much they can cut within certain amount of elapsed time

the thing is, for such a large store, theyre cost cutting means theyve only got about 15 people running it which is a huge load on them
