So there you have it. It was about 50%, you can see in the nice/alarming chart in the article. Fundamental driver is amount of people who have fled public transport due to virus concerns. Tick that one off as a win for the private vehicle!

However, it may be about the peak, prices have begun to fall.

It's been some years since Sprintey has taken public transport. Family egged him on, so he took the bus into town for an appointment. All was well. Returning home, a middle aged lady with an accent sat next to him. She looked at him a few times. And then, in a whisper:
"Do you like girls?"
"Pardon?"
"Do you like girls? Women?"
"Well, yes but what do you..."
"It's all a conspiracy!" she hissed under her breath.
"What?"
"Myki."
"Myki is a conspiracy?"
"Yes, it's a conspiracy against hetrosexual people. You are hetrosexual, yes?"
"Yes, I..."
"They are conspiring against us and it cost billions."

Then she pressed the bell, moved up to the exit, and got off. Sprintey hasn't taken public transport since, and in fact is not even sure if the Myki was logged off properly, it could still be riding somewhere...

I hope so, rising prices have made ute aspirations look increasingly unlikely this year. Scrolling through gumtree used to be fun.

I was only thinking today, about that wonderful all-black AU V8 ute Bushbasher found for sale early in the year. Now, it’s probably 50% more valuable.

Some of the best conversions I've ever had were on public transport. Even the nutters.

St Kilda tram, they are all nutters or backpackers.

Best one I had was with a fellow cyclist who like to hang upside down from the vestibal supports on the Interurban Gosford train stetching his back.

Found the best way to get the back seat to yourself on a Sydney northern beaches bus is to rock up covered in dust carrying a heavy tools bag after work.

the last time i went on public transport was years back, from picton to central station (Sydney), for working on the darling harbour extension. i had to catch a morning train at 4.45 , then worked the day out, then i had to get home. i had no idea how to do that, at peak hour and no staff around to help, talk about a fish out of water. i,m a country lad.
I finally get home at 10pm after two train changes. it was ridiculous and exhausting. one asian lady got really huffy with me , cause i sat next to her on the train, and i wasn't even trying to chat her up.
I would call the whole trip a disaster.

The next day i told the employer that i,m not going in. they didn,t sack me, but shorty after i quit, i'd been with that company of over five years.

i recently sold my ranger, i should have put on an extra 2k, i sold it over the phone for full price, within a week of advertising, that was a sweet deal for me.

Was an avid user of PT to get to the office everyday. Driving 120km (approx 3 - 4 hrs) round trip every day is not something i am keen on doing. The cost of that + parking is not worthwhile.

COVID has changed that, our company has now offered "flexible working," meaning they have mandated, unless you need to go to an office, work from home. In addition to this, the old days of cramming people into trains is unlikely to happen, meaning you could be waiting forever and a day to get a train. No thanks, rather not. So i can see why people are buying second hand cars.

Wondering if you are looking at a 100TD or 200 series Cruiser? The 100's I was looking at were up about 10 to 15K... no rush. Have enough cars. The young one is chuffed his 2011 FG XR6 is getting people asking him how much he paid, and saying they will also look for one. Up a couple of grand presently on his price?

One of the maddest public transport things I've ever seen was the school bus going home, one of the boys decided he was going to cycle behind the bus and slipstream it all the way home (think: 3 to 4 suburbs). He did it too! About 2 feet behind the bus, pedalling like a lunatic, intense concentration looking for the brake lights. We clamoured onto the back seat and were cheering him on!

Costs in CBD were crazy, always better when a job had some form of parking provided. Ran a little echo with seat down and all surveyors gear in the back, 2 floors below ground in the basement carparks was always able to find a nook to park it into.

At one point decided to flip the contract position and go to full time, using Perth's trains to earn the keep. Mistake. For one, all the glorious visiting sites all over Oz... now was interspersed with paperwork. Days of paperwork. Secondly, resplendent with work gear and name tag sewn in, Sprintey joined the train commuters. Mrs Sprintey decided a book might help the trip, an inspiring love story set in France in WW1. By page 18 the book had devolved into hardcore pornography. Looking up, astounded and quite bothered and hot, Sprintey began to wonder what everyone else was reading on the train. Scanning all the books - and the wonderful people reading them - it was all literary porn. And so Sprintey worked out where we'd all rather be.

It's the replacement for ye olde metcard public transport ticket here in Melbourne.

RFID card job, touch on, touch off.

Why every state implemented their own system rather than all using the same one is anyone's guess, well given how every state has handled the pandemic in their own way it's no surprise to be honest

I've got NSW's Opal and VIC Myki.

Of course the Myki also 'expires' and needs to be replaced after a couple years.

Interestingly some auction prices went up dramatically but equivalent private sales haven't.

As you mentioned earlier Myki has a use by which is crap. Out here we still buy Vline tickets to Melbourne but it covers all day travel in and around it which is pretty sweet.
NSW used to use a daily daytripper or an open weekly which was a pain as it didn't include the Manly Ferry but Opal card took over.
Opal card will last 9 years without use which is good cause I haven't used mine for 12 months now.

I agree. We've bought 3 vehicles in the last 6 Months. In all cases after extensive research, Whilst prices have Firmed, 50% is in my opinion pure journalistic Licence...
