Anyway! I'm car shopping in Sydney tomorrow. Found a Fairmont (EF) for private sale, and I'll be checking that out first. I'm only spending 5grand, I'll only be taking $5700 down (just incase).
But if this fairmont isn't any good, I'll be hitting paramatta road (Eh, I've heard the stories, but tomorrow is the only chance I'll get to buy, because I live in Forster/taree, which is 4 hours drive from sydney, and up here they're looking at $7400 for an EF falcon! Which is crap) and going through the dealerships... I'm paying cash, so do you think it's resonable to think I could get 500 off the price, and maybe push for 3 months warrenty? Any tips will help, I'm not going to be the ИИИИИИ, lol, I'll walk out of they start talking a hard bargin. There's plenty more Fairmonts around.... |

volcom can you not find one locally private? You will save heaps on doing this and still get the car NRMA inspected.
I'd never buy from a used car dealer again.

couldn't find any decent cars in Newcastle?
Anyhow id be wary of the dealers in Parra, i bought my current car from a dealer in Parra and had a good experience and got it for a good price, but definately be weary because some of them have plenty of the shonk. Do as much research as you can tonight and try to see them in a decent order, so you dont have to be running over sydney and maybe check out Newie or the central coast first on the way down, so perhaps you could pick one up on the way back (if you dont like the sydney stock). But yes i just checked carsales.com and there seems to be a shed load more cars in sydney. The only advice i can really gives, is for god sakes dont tell the dealer that you are down from foster for the day (he'll hold you to ransom) and use any damn excuse you can think of to get the price down (its not like fairmonts are rare). If its got yellow headlight get $300 bucks of it, etc. *** oh yeah, im pretty sure 3 months warranty is mandatory for all registered vehicless sold by dealers in NSW

You wouldn't get past first base with a used car salesman - they have you sized up in 5 seconds and use every trick in the book to think that they're your pal and once they have you relaxed...in for the kill. I don't blame them as that is their job unfortunately. Country people are like putty in their hands. So be very wary and don't believe anything they say. Best bet is to scan the Saturday Herald for a one owner and buy from the owner....you'll save $$$ and be buying from someone who loved their car and don't want to see it 'wholesaled'. If you do end up buying from a used yard remember 10% is the minimum you knock off for cash. Good luck.

two words if u have a trade in 2 words for u "change over" thats all they care about if u tell them this is what the cars worth and this is what I want trade in.If there still ahead on change over they will do the deal. Also try to go to a caryard that sells in Volume as u have a better chance of getting a better deal.

Open wallet, flash cash in front of salesman, tell him/her that you will buy today and watch them take money off the price.

End of the month is sometimes a good time to buy.
Cash still talks. Fear of loss is the game - that is what they use on you - its up to you to turn the tables and use it on them (fear of loss in terms of the sale) If you are going to buy from a dealer and you are buying a car with no warranty you may as well go and bid at a wholesale auction like pickles, rundles etc... you will pay less and after all that is where the dealers are getting some of their cars from.

May find this will exclude a fair number of EF Fairmonts. As the dealers would factor this warranty into the purchase price = most of the cheaper ones won't have a warranty.(warranties are about as useful as the piece of paper they're written on in most cases. Read the fine print & you'll know exactly what I mean) |

Seriously do not try to play games with these guys as the ones who make it and can keep a job and make money are just too good.
Better to be honest with them tell what you are looking for and really want and what you can afford to pay. There usually is a big reality gap here already then you add in 20% for the yard and salesman and thats how the business runs. never buy on first look sign nothing untill you have the cash in your pocket and have walked away at least two times and been introduced to the boss. Once they get two guys doing the good guy bad guy routine you know they have sized you up a serious buyer with money or credit. if you can take this and walk away and then ring them up a week later and say hey that wasn't a bad car you had do you need to move badly yet? you may get a decent price. remember bargains are rare. good cars at fair prices with $1500 on them to pay warranty detailing and salesman commission are uncommon and rip offs are the norm. |
