The loaner E46 I had some months back, was in this group. Owner is yet to replace the front airbags - it’s mostly driven by his wife.
Aside, I do wonder how these recalls address competent DIY people. Can you present your old airbags and receive new ones to fit? I can’t see how it can be mandated that a BMW agent work on your car. |

The liability is on the manufacturer and if you change it yourself, there's no record that it has been done properly and checked to procedure. |

How many other vehicles are in same basket that companies are keeping quiet about?

Probably none. The chain of liability is well clear by now.
Fortunate any of my airbag equipped cars are either Autoliv or whatever Ford Oz used. |

Major auto companies had to support Takata so that it wouldn't collapse,
so there's a lot of industry good will to ensure that all faulty bags are changed. I think it's a first in the industry where a supplier hasn't been buried in bankruptcy by vengeful manufacturers. Getrag could be another after Ford took all the heat for DPS6. |

Other cars, under dash work has reliably resulted in misaligned foam seals, damaged wiring or retainer clips, fasteners lost into the carpet or console, items over or under tightened. I have no irrational fear of pyrotechnics, they deserve to be treated with care and safety but that’s all. And yes, if you want me to be blunt about it I trust my work fitting them more than that of someone under the squeeze by an employer. |

For a recall item, you have to take it to them and have your vehicle taken off the register.
In some states, Govco is now talking about not re-registering vehicles or preventing sale with registration until owners have the air bag changed and manufacturer confirms it done. They've got you by the nuts with this one. gotta love Euro marques and their crappy dealers. |

What if I take the old airbags into Service NSW and hand them in at the counter?

It’s not hard at all, to find them for sale. I’m not sure you could call it “used” but you couldn’t call it “new” or “good”. ;-)
The aforementioned E46 isn’t my car, for reasons stated prior I would not accept the work of others in replacing its airbags were it mine. (Who’d let an apprentice pack a parachute?) As it stands I will document and rectify any items of mis-work in the replacement. |

Who are these “approved specialists”? Please advise with specific reference to NSW.

The recall work has to be done on behalf of the manufacturer by an approved dealer. Your replacement work will not be accepted, end of story. |

Several years ago I re-registered a statutory write-off in NSW after sectional repair; this being possible as I satisfied the ownership criteria.
The actual RMS inspector asked me who fitted the replacement airbags. I told him, it was me, I had a receipt identifying the front cut donor which was all above board. There was no question of qualification to undertake this task. All my receipts were copied and filed, that was where it ended. My blue slip was complete. (I know they had physically checked the validity of the airbags as one screw in the steering wheel bag was cross-threaded and they’d broken the $28 worth of frangible clips holding the passenger front bag cover in place.) |

I read in an article that Honda in the USA had been actively purchasing ALL second-hand Takata airbags from wreckers and eEbay, in order to get them disposed off.

Odds-on some smarties start making knock-offs to profit from the buyback, it’d be like the oft-suggested bounty on cane toads which would see people breeding the buggers.

Watching some of the BMWs on the road today I think many of their drivers have forgotten how to drive anyway and for many of them it's about image and posing rather than driving :-)

I wish the police had a system where if they read your number plate it came up as not being repaired and they could pull you over and force you to have it towed. The fact that there are still thousands of Takata airbags around despite the blanket coverage is disgraceful.
Rego should be cancelled as well. |
