"Simply smoking." Those are the exact words that John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai USA, used to describe early sales of the automaker's new Genesis Coupe during a recent interview with Motor Trend. The highly-anticipated two-door is selling better than the Genesis Sedan, which arrived on the market last year, even though Hyundai has focused more advertising dollars on the larger luxury sedan.
Still a newcomer, the Genesis Coupe is offered in turbocharged 2.0-liter and normally-aspirated 3.8-liter trim. The bulk of the cars on dealer lots have been the V6 models, with the late-to-arrive four-cylinder variants (including the Track model and next year's R-Spec model) yet to make a significant impact on sales. Seemingly undeterred by its $27,500 sticker price, Krafcik says that more than 50 percent of the 3.8-liter buyers are driving home in the loaded Grand Touring model (the entry-level 2.0T starts at just $22,000).

That actually doesn't look half bad, it has a Jaguar/Lexus presence about it. I must say, I wouldn't be completely ashamed to be seen in one of these.

I have been talking to Hyundai about the genesis being turned into a sports sedan. They hinted there will be a 5.5 litre v8's version in the future.
Hyundai have already given a drift bloke one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNKDn...eature=channel |

Not a bad looking car really. Its like that other thing that looks like a BMW, take away the badges and you'd fool half the people you know into thinking you're driving a great car.

My shots of the Genesis sedan / coupe while in Korea Jan this year.
If we were to get either of them here Hyundai would be nuts to not bring in the V8, it only uses a small fraction more fuel than the V6. |

should have put the Genesis badge on the coupe too, chucking on the Hyundai badge makes it look cheap and nasty.

Looks ok for a Hyundai, but honestly, I still don't really like it. And my opinion is not based on it's badge or country of origin, I just don't like the look of it, it doesn't flow neatley enough for me. It looks like it doesn't know if it want's to be a muscle car, or an executive car.

Heres something cool to note:
The Genesis V6 LAMBDA engine puts out 228Kw with 0-100 in 6.1 The Kia Grand Carnival (Minibus) V6 LAMBDA puts out 184Kw with 0-100 in 7.5 seconds. The ONLY difference between the two engines is different cams and ECU tunes. I'm talking down to the pistons, rings, etc. Identical except for those two. Gearboxes are different and the Carni is FWD and weighs 2.1 metric ton empty.

Its like the Tiburon's they've been making, they've all had the looks and if they were made by nissan/toyota/honda etc they would be really popular. But alas its the korean stigma and hopefully this proves its worth - remember everyone thought the same things about the Japanese but now look.......

Am I the only one who thinks that coupe looks crap?
Front is ugly. Rear looks typical Hyundai. Side is ok. |

I think it's a nice looking car, but I would't want one.
As far as a V8 goes, in the video in the link above the guy never says anything about there being a V8 in the car, never says anything about a V8, doesn't show any engine, and doesn't sound like a V8 on the track. Does Hyundai even make a V8? At one time not too long ago Hyundai had one of the worse quality reputations. I know they have done a lot to improve this and their quality is actually pretty good now. They seem to be getting more recognition for this than Ford does, as far as how it translates to sales, and Ford's quality is better (US). Any thoughts? Steve
