Default Rings of death (xbox 360 fatal error)

Oh yes, the joys of american build quality and reliability. Yep i got it about 20 minutes ago playing halo 3. I've never had a problem with it before, it just randomly deceided to die on me. And im really a bit confused about what to do now, this is the first time ive EVER had anything go wrong on any console ive ever owned. So if anyone could show me it would be greatly appreciated. And ive also included 2 pictures to show that i dont keep in a cramped environment or keep anything draped over it to make it over heat. (because i know thats a problem)

warranty will cover it, Microsoft has lost A LOT of money due to problems, check out xbox forums to read more about it. Better find your warranty card asnd give them a call.

Cant call customer support, only open from 7am-9pm. But its the first thing i will do tomorrow morning. And the website is quite helpful, but im still not sure how the console gets fixed, i mean, do i have to physically take it to someone? or will they come to me, or what happens?

I just had the eact same thing happen to me. Don't worry about it it's just a lil inconvienience, there's a three year warrenty on the three red lights. First thing to do is to check your power cable if the lght on the AC adaptor is red when the xbox is on then the problem is your power and all you have to do is check the connections. If it green then call 1800555741 that's the support center. Go through the menu to xbox 360 problems. The guy will make you send your xbox (free of charge) to somewhere in Australia (for me it was NSW) and I herd usaully it take 7-14 days.

Random comment: I sent mine in bundy rum carton which I hope would've gotten there hopes up for a sec

Edit: just saw the second pic and seems your powers fine.

Yeah it's a pain in the ar*e, I think there are many more than microsoft are letting on to be honest. At least yours wasn't chipped lol.

The new consoles (elite, halo 3 and premiums made from late may) have newer motherboards that don't overheat as much and have apparently fixed the issue, no doubt they will put one in yours. Good luck with it, my mates took a week to fix

really???
whats the code?
I had the problem about 6 months ago (before they announced the 3 year warranty deal) and pulled my 360 apart and refit the heatsinks onto the motherboard with a better system (as well as cleaned the old paste off the chips and put some new stuff on). Anyway, worked fine for about 5 months until it started playing up again all of a sudden. Bit the bullet and just bought a new one but still have the old one sitting here. It still plays up.

Just curious what code they got you to put in, thought i'd try it too???

you dont need a receipt, because its such a big problem, they repair it for free. All you need is the serial number stamped on the back of the console.

I'm surprised the PS3 hasn't had similar issues. It almost definately has, but the consoles are probably repaired extremely fast by Sony, and the owners are bribed to make sure that word never gets out. All to ensure that Sony is percieved as "Better Quality".

Apparently as a temporary fix you can wrap your console in a towel and it stops it from overheating. How ? I have no idea but it works.

Mine hasn't overheated but the DVDs like randomly stopping. Sometimes I play forza and get around a corner to a missing track ... Just a big whole in the ground but the walls are still there and I have to guess whats grass and whats road lol.

How do they know date of purchase without a receipt - Does the serial get logged when you buy it?

this is a well documented and wide spread (global) problem and relates to a manufacturing fault of the devices. I believe it is due to either a missing heat sink on some of the chips or the wrong size/type being used so it isn't absorbing the heat properly

As someone has said, there is heaps on the xBox forums about this

It's a very common issue with XBox 360's, with the problem reaching almost plague proportions. There have been some overheating issues with some Wii and PS3 consoles as well, though the amount is very minor compared to the amount of 360's that have failed.

It actually heats it up more and melts the dry solder joints on the motherboard.

Some of the problems with 360s are actually caused by RoHS compliant solder being used on these devices, which dries up and creates poor connections between components.
