Today while driving around for work I noticed my steering feel a bit toey.I had found one of my tyres had low air pressure. I filled it up and off I went. I headed from the city towards King Georges Road inside the m5 first tunnel. From the left hand side rear I had a very strange noise which sounded like the diff or bearing. Then bung something broke free!! the car continued forward and slightly sideways in the tunnel but luckily I counter steered and stopped straight as mt my rear passengers tyre bounced past my passengers window!! Luckily even though I was in heavy traffic no everyone stopped .I jumped out to find that 4 of my 5 rear wheel studs had sheared off .
The traction bars under my leaf springs literally gave the car enough ground clearance that no damage had occured to the brake, axle housing or anything else under the car. Also because of the extra clearance because of the traction bars the car slid forward safely like it was on skis. If the traction bars were not on the car then the bottom would have dug into the ground and planted me into the wall. I was towed to my wreckers ,a good axle, disc and handbrake asssembly installed and I am safely home.Thank heavens. The traction bars saved my butt!!

What time was this about? Do you know what may have caused the broken studs?
Good to hear you're safe. The M5 tunnel is probably one of the worst places to have an acco. |

Did the loose wheel bounce into anything, that could have been much much worse ala Craig Lowndes at Bathurst the other year.

Damn that was both lucky and unlucky. Glad to hear it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
You could have called into our depot and had a chat with Dad while you were waiting for the towies! I knew there was a reason why I don't let tyre places tighten my studs with a rattle gun. Maybe that's just so I actually have a chance to get them off if I have a flat out on the road somewhere

That must be why all the good tyre shops have signs saying "all wheel nuts must be hand tightened" these days. They don't make wheel studs (or pretty much anything) like they used to.

Similar thing happened to me a few months ago. Rattle gun didn't tighten the nuts enough and they eventually worked loose and the wheel went on its own mystical journey to freedom. Luckily it was only at 20 kph.

Yep I had the same thing happen to me, 4 out of 5 studs snapped, lucky the fifth one didn't go and the wheel stayed on. In my case it was the same as Bossxr8, wheel nuts were to loose and that caused the studs to snap. I've actually spoken to a couple of Ford Mechanics and they all reckon that studs on the Falcon most commonly break because the nuts are too loose, not the other way round. Go figure
