My local BP dealer informs me that soon you will only have two choices E10 or premium, 91 octane will no longer be made. So if you have a vehicle that is not compatible with E10 you will have no option but to run premium. An extra 8 - 10 cents per litre. I am not sure if he was having a lend of me, however, I tend to believe him because he doesn't have much of a sense of humour and is usually straight down the line.

The upgrade of a car to run on E10 is not all that hard I would imagine??

Just replace the fuel lines and possibly the pump / filter. I read that the main reason a car was not compatable was due to the corrosive nature of E10...

No, the reason they sell e10 here is because most cars can run on it with no issues. Straight ethanol or blends like e85 would not be suitable for most of our cars - actually, anything over e20 would be no good.

I always run 98ron....so unless they get rid of that. I'm not worried....Like food, fuel is pretty much essential these days. I'll pay for it no matter what it costs, simply cause I couldn't get by without my car.

Pretty much nailed it, some days I wonder if Ethanol is actually the most corrosive element in the world. Stainless steel fuel systems will be the new stainless steel exhausts.

According to Ford any Falcon after 1986 will run on E10. Call the 13FORD number and it will list the models that can and cannot run on e10.

E10 is a scam . it is less economic than straight petrol . the 3 cents you save is burnt up in your lesser economy.

Regardless of blends etc. Fuel will still be the cheapest thing you put in your car.

While the basic Ford Six was code named Barra, the Turbo version clearly deserved its very own moniker – again enter Gordon Barfield.
We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about.
“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

With the amount of small turbo hatchbacks out there I'd say demand is there to keep 98 RON at the bowsers. A lot of new cars out there that will only take premium.

I've been running my clevo on United's ethanol blend due to its higher octane rating for six months with no issues. I did have to replace the sender gaskets on both tanks after a tank of "premium " from another company that claimed no ethanol in their fuel though. Both tanks started leaking within 24 hours of being filled up after 40 years of being leakproof.... Hmmm.......
I'm running a new edelbrock carb and no problems with the United stuff so far.
Regards,
Tote

16 replies and everyone discussing ethanol.

the article in question discusses oil reserves. NOT ETHANOL.

anyway, i think the article is rather flawed. while there may be a good reserve of oil supplies for the near future (and i'm talking months), it is well documented that oil production is peaking.

this will require some reading time though, so those who can only spend half a minute to read a couple of replies and then post something that has nothing to do with the original post, then i'd suggest you don't click on this link... http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/

But he's right. Pure ethanol is highly corrosive. Ethanol mixed with standard ULP is only marginally more corrosive than ULP (ie hardly at all). And the ethanol boosts the octane - how do you think the RON rating of 98 was achieved with little price difference (5c) a few years ago? With ethanol, of course. Then the proverbial hit the fan, and the fuel companies were forced to declare which fuels have ethanol in them, so now they make PULP the "other" way (ie more expensive refining), which is why it's around 10cpl dearer than ULP.

KenLee - something called price, and for most of us, running 98RON is a pointless exercise - the cars don't care if it's a higher octane than ULP, as far as the ECU is concerned, it's still 91RON, and the car runs the same. Of course, for performance varieties where 96 or 98 RON is specified to achieve max power, then you'd be mad not to use it, but I don't envy you guys paying your $1.60 per litre, and then getting 400km out of a tank!

98 RON I think you mean.

But as JC has pointed out, there is no advantage in running it unless your car has been designed for it.

So your willing to offer a gaurantee to people on this list that advises against E10 so they can start using it?

http://www.fcai.com.au/ethanol.php/2.../00000005.html

As silly as you think it is, there must be a reason behind it. Self proclaimed experts who know better and think that anything can / will run on E10 on anything that uses petrol with no bad outcome make me laugh even harder....
