Hey guys.
Atm company i work for have put a proposal to all the apprentices for us to go onto group training and they go as our "host" employer. The GTO is CVGT. "Central Victorian Group Training". 2 of the guys i work with have had bad experiences with CVGT as i have myself. The company are trying to tell us it is for the better. Not forcing us they letting us think about it. Can anyone comment on this more. The more i find out the worse it is looking so far. EG atm we are on a EBA award wage which is quite good. There plan is we work 6 months of the year with current company then the other 6 months with someone else. now if that happens to be a small single man operation looking for cheap labour we could drop more than half our current wage. Also any incentives i have heard CVGT will keep. Atm we get paid all those for whatever we wanna spend it on. Any comments welcome. Cheers |

If you are happy about how it is working out, and they arent giving you an ultimatum such as, "do it or else" then stay.
I made the mistake of doing it when i was 16, my employer at the time said "do a traineeship in business, then you will have a qualifications etc... Little did i know that my wages would be cut and tax withheld making me pay double... Suprise suprise, through CVGT aswell.

yeah well they cant force us. to well backed by unions atm and only getting stronger with new gov.
I am very happy with the way my job is atm. The boss at our branch isnt keen on the idea at all along with other guys qualified and not. Been talking to some other people about it and havent been able to come up with a good response about cvgt. so looking like i will be saying go jump. |

All the apprentices at my work are hired through Group Training (Brisbane), and recently my boss has told all of them, that once they have finished their apprenticeship, they will know longer have a job, and have to leave..

It can go either way mate.
If your employer is serious about giving you the best training, it gives him the opportunity to get you working in workshops/situations or on machinery he can't provide. Which gives you a wider field of experience and makes you more employable once finished. On the other hand, if your employer is more interested in saving money (it's not cheap to train an apprentice), he might hire you out to his mate who just needs a 'gopher' a lot, in which case you won't learn much at all. On wages, I think they have to match or better what your current employer pays you. Not sure though...Jonhhy may have provided a loophole allowing them to pay minimum award rates.

well from what i understand we wont actually be employed by current employer. We will be employe by CVGT. then basically subby'd out to whoever. We will get paid whatever the rate is. EG atm i am on 13 odd bucks an hour. Which can drop down to the award of about 6 bucks an hour if i work with joe blogs electrical seviceman.
think i will tell em to shove it and see if we can organise a thing without CVGT. maybe hired out to other companies if we can form a partnership etc. having a meeting again with cvgt tomorrow morning so will see what happens then cheers |
