Sad news, but is it really news in the first place? Everyone knows our manufacturing industry coffin is slowly being lowered into where it gets burnt so its no real suprise another manufacturer laid off another few hundred workers.

Its sad and its not a good job market out there at the moment, consumer confidence is at a low, people aren't spending much coin as they were before, less jobs to go around nation wide.

Was just a matter of time. Sales have been continually dropping for quite a while now.

At 240 cars a day, you would have to say they are going to give up on a few of the export LHD markets. Theres circa 120 commodores for local, 10 for NZ (always work of around 1/10th of OZ), 25 Utes for Oz, 3 for NZ, 60 cruzes for Oz, 6 for NZ, (thats 224 a day). and some LWB.

Yep I get it but find Holden's latest adverts really annoying, pushing the little aussie kid thing. Your leaving at least do it with some decorum.

yes very sad, and many more to come no doubt from other makers and industries that work with the car makers.

it just makes me angry we are losing our manufacturing and people are losing their jobs, but what i see all the time ....and have seen for decades, is the tossers(powers ) that be............ have put us in a position of relying more and more for trade on other countrys to keep our country running,
rather than building our own industries and pushing aussies to buy aussie made products.

I'd tip that Cruze would be pulled up early. Crap sales for a car with little profit in it.

From my experience there are 220 production days in one year. So Holden have removed 11,000 cars from their planned production (down to 53,000). To think in 2003 they produced just over 130,000 vehicles. Amazing how quickly the industry has imploded.

youd hang on as long as you could imo
i think they get 3 weeks a year if they take it now but will get 4 or 4.5 weeks a year if they are lucky enough to be one of the ones that can hang on till the end
could make a big diff for someone thats been there for a long time

which is all well and good, but if they dont get the 275 people sticking their hands up then im guessing they will pick who they want gone

happy to be corrected tho

I guess theres going to be a few highly skilled people who know they can get a job somewhere else, and will want to put their hands up. But then again, Holden may just decide they need certain people to go. The problem with hanging around, is that you may get a better package, but your also looking for a job when a thousand others are also looking

Just putting it in perspective, it says only 50 cars less a day, but its currently around 7 to 8
percent of all cars made in Australia each day. Its a huge chunk if you supply to all three makers, devastating if you just supply to Holdens. No supplier would be making money from the Cruze, as Holden simply channels imported parts thru them to feed to the line, if it all comes via commodore cutbacks , it will be felt much worse.

In other news Nissan are looking for workers to make Auto Parts in Australia.
I did not know that Nissan still made Car Parts here.

Yes I remember a couple of years ago when job hunting that they were doing a fair bit of local manufacturing, new premises, and supporting the Leaf with some electrical components.

Wow, I had no idea this was going on... A shame Ford or Holden or Toyota couldn't do the same. Hopefully some of the other smaller cars business can survive as well
