Central Locking problem

My EL Wagon has just developed a strange problem with the central locking.

Sometimes when I press the remote to unlock the doors, the doors unlock then lock again. When this happens if I use the key it unlocks fine.

Also if I press the button on the dash to lock or unlock the doors, the doors lock and then unlock about three times then stop in the locked position. This happens when the engine is on. If the engine is off the dash button works fine.

So,
- Using the key always works fine to lock or unlock the car.
- The remote works fine to lock the doors.
- The remote only sometimes works to unlock the doors, other times it unlocks then locks them again.
- The button on the dash works fine with the engine off, but with the engine on it locks then unlocks the doors about three times in a row.

Any ideas what of what could be wrong ?

I got the same problem with my ef only it keeps going up and down for ages sometimes, this seems to occur mostly on hot days. Does yours play up regardless of the outside temp?

Its only done it on two days, today and a couple of days ago.
Today wasn't too hot.
And mine also goes on for more then 3 cycles sometimes.

My Girlfriends XF started doing this about 12 months after buying it,
One of the front locks had moved down a couple of millimeters after a while and the door lock wasn't in the full up position.It must of rattled loose over time..

Take your front door trims of and loosen the two screws that are on the locking rods,make sure your door locks are up then tighten the screws up again.
I am almost certain this is what the problem will be..

It works fine if I use the key, so could it be a door lock that is loose ?
If it was loose it wouldn't make a difference if I use the remote or key right ????

Possible mate, the car used to lock with a key but not from inside..it would just pop back up straight away. It was a ten minute job to check and fix the problem.

E series may be different though?

The EL only has one button on the drivers door, the other doors don't have a button. If i push the button down it locks all doors OK. If I open the door from inside(when its locked) all doors open fine.

yeah im sort of haveing the same problem ,when i press the remote it locks then unlocks it self again ,but if i lock it with the key it usually locks with out a problem sometime it will lock unlock lock ,it only started after i took the door trims off after changeing door handles

I have the same problem with my NC fairlane, and know a lot of other ppl with the same problem. seems to be very common.

I had that problem with an EA.
The cause was that one or more locks was not moving freely, or correctly.
On the EA the doors can be opened or locked from any door. May have the same locks but with different control. If the doors are locked, but one lock does not lock, the system sees that as a signal to reopen. But when they reopen the driver is closing them.

Few mistakes there in my post, but the problem was fixed a few years ago. Remember a bent rod and also wireing terminals and there must be switch contacts.

This is my first car that has had this problem.
I haven't had a problem with my EB Ghia, EF GLi or my AU T3.

And it seems to be worse on hot days, so maybe it is a tight rod that expands when it gets hot and then doesn't move as it should.

My EB had the problem on hot days.

The NC has it, the LHF lock won't lock/unlock with the remote/dash button. I figure the motor is flogged. I'm just too lazy to change it.

I also have this problem on my EL II XR8, like you said mainly on hot days (which they all are in North QLD), locks cycle for ages and the the horn sounds, i think it could be the passenger front door on mine, because all other doors can be unlocked and that one stays locked. I have this problem unlocking/locking with/without the interior button....DRIVING ME CRAZY!
