A lesson learnt. Not a good idea to try and catch a flying meteorite.

So it only caused an 8cm scar on his hand, yet a 30cm crater in the road? Doesn't seem right. I doubt it was a direct hit, probably a scrape or graze.
If it were a square hit based on the speed and size of the rock his hand would have been blown off down to the wrist.... or a nice seared hole left behind. |

if it was a direct hit on the flat it probably would have just punched a hole straight through his hand.

I hope they give the meteorite back to the kid so he can keep it.
How lucky is he!! That is amazing!

i'm surprised it didnt rip his hand off on impact
traveling at 48,000km/h.that would go through a car Jason

It surprises me it didn't cause more damage.
When I was in school we were told if you dropped a coin of the Eiffel tower it would go through someones skull.....

I doubt it was travelling at 48000 kph once it entered our atmosphere... it would have slowed up a fair bit and reached its terminal velocity once it got close to earth..

I think not, gravity is a constant force, the coin would reach its maximum speed after a few meters and keep falling at that rate all the way down, it dosn't constantly increase in speed... |

The meteor is glowing hot because its burning up from friction caused by resistance to the atmosphere, the inital speed and inertia it had when it entered our atmosphere will have slowed up considerably as it looses mass to probably hundreds of miles per hour by the time it hit the kid.

Interesting story........will make a good story for the grand kids.
But I hate the way reporters write articles....with just made up crap in it rather than facts....."Chances of getting hit be a meteorite are said to be on in a million".....so he is saying that about 20 people get hit by meteorites in Australia alone : . Still a good story though. |

Firstly, when I went to school a meteorite burnt up in the atmosphere and a meteor struck the Earth. So it was a meteor.
Secondly, it probably slowed down to 48000kph in owing to resistance from the atmpsphere. It is difficult for us to comprehend celestial speeds - the Earth travels at over 100000kph along it's orbit around the Sun! Thirdly, it was more probable that the boy's hand passed through the trail of superheated gasses following the meteor. Let's face it, if a pea sized object had enough force to dig a hole the size of half a basketball, had it hit anywhere on his hand, he would have lost at least up to his wrist as Yellow Festiva said. All pure speculation. The kid was very unlucky to have been "hit", but having been "hit", is lucky to be alive. Last edited by tpintas; 14-06-2009 at 11:13 AM. |

Its funny reading this thread. People trying to sound like scientists.
"Oh, but the terminal velosity would have risen when it hit the child." Oh lardy lardy dar!

P.S - Acceleration due to gravity is 9.82m/s. Though for some reason they allow you to use 10m/s in tests : P.P.S - Don't quote me on anything physics, I failed light and forces.

Evidently, the chances are 100%.....it happened, right? : And for my Scientist part, terminal velocity is in relation to acceleration from a body starting to fall from rest. This thing had HUGE amounts of energy behind it as it was forced into the atmosphere. Steve

9.8 or 10 m/s is actually a velocity, acceleration is m/s/s used to be written m/s2. it is a change in velocity of 10 m/s every second.
