Default Head gasket

I am getting the head gasket done on tuesday. It has be using alot of water for about a week and a half but never got hot untill today while in traffic then went back to normal about 1 min max it was in the red. I make sure that ther is plenty of water in it every morning and afternoon about 1 ltr to 1.5ltrs a day it goes through. I was just wondering how long would it take till there was some serious damage to the head if not already?

It will be getting shaved and tested.

plenty of people run around with blown head gaskets for ages.
you're best to jump on it asap, its only going to get worse.. but so far it should be fine.
