Oh god...I give this thread one hour.
It all depends on what you find important in life, and what you need at the time; or more importantly, where your job is.

Adelaide is ok I guess. We do have some awesome beaches here, a Mediterranean type climate (wet and cold in Winter and hot and dry in Summer), the Barossa Valley and the Adelaide Hills nearby, a well designed city in a grid (but poor roads leading into it), its relatively cheap to get a house here compared to other cities.... probably less crime than some, but more murders!
Downside is that there isnt much career-wise going on here if you really want to get somewhere. Just have to be lucky or know someone really... hard in my industry. Its not real exciting as far as nightlife is concerned... Melbourne is ok but I dont like Sydney at all. I like Brisbane and GC too, great Winters up there! Like Perth and have never been to Darwin or Hobart.

I have lived in Sydney all my life (so far not long) and I love it. The education system is pretty good IMO, the weather is very nice, the beaches are great, the city is beautiful and the suburbs are pleasant. The water is nice, and there is a lot of telephone reception. The public transport is of poor quality, and often late, but the network is quite extensive.
I have been to Melbourne a lot of times, and it is a very nice, and mellow seeming place. The weather is all over the shop, as are a lot of the drivers, probably dodging those damn trams. As much as you hate them as a road user, as a commuter, they are far better than any of the Sydney bus services. Cleaner, more punctual and a practical ticketing system. The roads are nice, quite smooth, and the housing is quite nice. I'm moving to Melbourne when I finish school here, so we shall see how I find it.

e.g. value of housing-rent or buy,climate,lifestyle,beaches,roads,transport,
cost of living, crime, landscape,!! INNISFAIL cheap houses, get a world famous cyclone larry wrecked house climate.....rains at least once a week, hot in summer, cool in winter lifestyle....pretty cruisy, work during week, cairns is a 45min drive away....nightclubs, casino, other places beaches... ella bay, etty bay, mourilyan harbour if that counts...all within 20-30 mins drive roads..... ive seen worse, but most of the streets have been resurfaced transport.... small enough to work from one side to other in about 1 hour or less cost of living....rates are cheap, coles, woolies and IGA..all pretty much besides each other (all expensive no matter where), fuel well sometimes cheaper than townsville crime..... theres maybe a couple a month, mostly high school students or some drunk, very rarely though....everyone knows each other landscape..... reasonably flat, some hills, some very expensive and beautiful views to, there are alot of driveways and gutters that are killers though forgot to mention, i wouldnt live there unless i was in retirement.....not many job opportunities unless you like woolies and $7/hour, but recreation theres alot and theres also cairns to the north and townsville to the south

beaches-better than sydneys and no gangs transport-in terms of public dont really know. roads are good but could do with a jhh by-pass. climate is perfect as well not as humid as the northern states and not as cold as southern nstates but we do get our fair share of rain

Why can't this thread stay open? =/
My choice.. MELBOURNE! Best music in the country. Sydney (from my experience of 3 seperate trips, including going both by car and airport... airport is a shocker) is ruled by a majority of arrogant, ignorant, selfish, yuppy pricks who couldn't care less about others. Every time I asked for help or directions up there I got one word replies, shrugs, POINTED directions (couldn't even be bothered talking to me), or a rug 'I don't know' (which was the answer from the lady at the airport TRAIN SERVICE about where acer arena was).. My rant :p Darwin's real nice, so is Brissy at times. I also love Hobart for something quiet. Canberra is poo IMO, Adelaide is pretty boring, Alice Springs was good for landscape/culture, and I haven't visited WA yet! |

bourke closely followed by auckland and jo-berg. And whats the point of the thread? Everyone will nominate their own cities. Pretty pointless. If you want to get into the gritty of australias best cities then look at the comparisons done by mercers, which if i recall did put auckland ahead of sydney.

dont get me wrong,i do like melbourne, only been a few times ,longest i stayed was about four days,
winter is so cold and even spring and autumn very cold at night and hate taking so many clothes with me everywhere as the temp and rain ,change so often, also seems a big divide between rich and poor, same as in the u.s.a. i love the sport ,aussie rules etc and the g rocks, trams good, houses getting expensive like syd i think, newcastle, can be humid, lot of bashings in cbd,per percentage of poulation ,crime in cbd rates higher than anyway in australia, high unemplyment, fish and seafood very expensive to buy and not much availble which surprised me- people more snobby than sydney ,i agree on that ,unless you know them for there whole life ,dont want to know you,i think its little town syndrome-very unfriendly -out of all the cities if you qwant to call it a city,i would say town, most unfriendly adelaide-not multicultaral at all-a bit like newcastle-low wages-not many good looking women ,very average-lucky if you see one in a hundred and we went everywhere ,night clubs restaraunts etc even more average in bikinis at the beach, think there sports teams are good, when they dont win much at all, frontrunners, but choke most times when it counts!! bris-gangs-voilence-drunken yobs everwhere- terrible road layout in city-so many one way streets-dry landscape- gold coast-tourists everywhere-expensive-fake blonde tryhard girls everywhere!! |

Live in Canberra and like living in Canberra. If it had the beach I would never leave the place to be honest. Nightlife could be a bit better but meh.

Someone might be able to help me while we're at it. I currently live in Hobart, and am looking to move to Sydney in the near future, I am just wondering the renting costs of a one bedroom place in the Parramatta/Penrith area.

I live in Geelong. Best assets about Geelong are Family and Friends. I love my Family and Friends but 10 Acres in Tassie sounds good too. The wife wont move though so this is my "Retirement Plan". Tassie gets my vote.

I almost froze in Melbourne in January, it was 16 degrees. The service was shocking form the time I arrived. While I was waiting half an hour (for no reason) to be served at the rent a car counter, everytime the automatic doors opened it was like someone was opening and closing a fridge.
Every service, queue is slow as a wet week (no pun intended) and when you do get served they act like they are doing you a favour. I found the wreckers very disinterested in having me as a customer and nothing really to offer, especially that place with the red XC coupe in the back, it was like I was wasting their time. Then I want something from Early Bird, he talls me he can get it but he can't, then I ring him when Im back home and he says he will get me what I want (for free) if I let him use my house as his accomodation for his trip to WSID drags. (he still can't get what I want so I end up buying it off E bay)Then tries to pass off a blue XC console as a green one. I wont bother saying anything about GT Ford Performance because I am sure there are people on here who worship them. |
