Default Grechie's Cars Reborn!!

SHE'S ALIVE!!!! AFTER 5 Weeks 1 Day !! Ill post pics ASAP!!! took us 7 hours but yes its finally done, still need a few things done, but she started!!

we ran into 1 problem along the way near completion, no spark, we were like umm wtf? checked the plug going into the coil (2 wires) 1 wasnt touching, ended up plug was rooted, wen we pulled it out it was damaged, so we cut the plug n made our own ends, n yea took 1 hour, real cramped room n hard to get to,, but she fired up after connecting the new replacment wires up, now i just needa no a few other questions, dont want to stuff this one up!!!

1) we put in 5 litres of that valvoline run in oil, and its THIN as CRAP!!!! the motors ticking like crazy and oil compression guage after car warmed up was on the 2nd notch, n went up raised the throttle a tiny bit, normal yeah?? and how long should i leave it idling for and wot are recomended precautions eg wen driving

2) also i was told it will be a bit smoky till the rings settle, coz i was revving it to 2000rpm n slowly creeping it to 2000rpm, no more...and it wasnt puffing it out but it was just very light blue smoke not big chunks wen doing so, and continued doing so for the 15 mins it was on (only when applying throttle not on idle

3) the lifters ticking there @$$ off, when will they settle? or wont they till i use a thicker oil?, i forgot to soak them in oil b4 putting them in, woops, so will i have to take it for a drive for the lifters to settle?

havent driven it yet, need to put bonnet on, fix up gear shifter, n thats it! be cruising tomoz night for sure!!!

RIP Oil Burning Motor !!!

please dont tell me you used that valvoline only 30w oil? there is a penrite 1 for running in and its 20w 50 use that 1. keep it in for 500km then put in gtx3 and then at 1000kms you can change again and leave it for 5000kms, and regards to how long to idle it the more you idle it while running in the more you will glaze up your bores and will result in using oil. when we rebuild engines at work (full reco) when we get em started we only run em for 2 mins and then stop it check the usual oil and that and then take it out on the road not far just some load on her. try find some hills and windy roads.

If you have oil coming out of the holes in the top of the rockers then the lifters should be fine and quieten down after a few minutes.

I hope you didnt let it idle for more than 1 or 2 minutes. Motors need LOAD to bed in. Idling glazes the bores and is not advised. Get it started and get some WOT load onto the motor from 2500-4000rpm. Vary the rpm, but LOAD it up.

Correct. The more load (repeat: load, not thrashing) that is placed on a new engine, the better. You need everything to seal properly, otherwise, once you do start thrashing, she'll fall apart.

i havent thrashed her at all,. but the first time she started, we did let it idle for a while, probly the reason why we can smell oil at the lights wen i stop n stuff, will it eventually go away?

also took her for a long as drive tonite on ther highway varying speeds from 90 to 110 then goin back round the st's n only revving to 2500 rpm etc, racked up 372k's with no thrashing....

yeah, load, (more exactly) cylinder pressure forces the rings against the bore to make them seal properly before the rough hone surface is glazed over, therefore, not able to bed the rings anymore

You can safely take it upto 3000rpm. Drive it in a range of speed zones, 40, 50, 60, 80 for the first 1000-1500kms. Try to stay away from 100 and do not stay at one constant speed for ages (i.e: Melb to Geelong). This means drive it as much as possible around Melbourne just to clock up the K's. Then you can increase the rev's to about 4500.

After you've driven about 100 K's on the motor, dump the oil and change the oil filter. Then do the same thing at 1000 K's. This helps to get rid of any left over grime when the block was cleaned up.

Great work mate, it's ready for another 300,000 K's of travel.

yep, the ring spring tension against the bores is very minimal, 99% of ring pressure comes from cylinder gases in behind the rings forcing them against the bores. The window of opportunity for a honed bore to properly shape the rings to fit is tiny, you have to bed the rings in the first few km, once the honed surface is gone, thats how it will stay....

dont stress, it'll b fine, youve done exactly what did when i bedded my donk in, but i did not know of the above info at that time...
