Hey guys,
My diff is screwed iwelded something to something, anyway these are the prices they gave me: $450 for reco lsd $485 for re-Trace (new barings and acid flush and seals) $250 for labour and oil (not including GST) Now they want to add another $695 for 3.9 ratio gears So jsut keeping the same ratio and LSD $1300(inc GST) But if i want to change the ratio $2050(inc GST) like am i gettin ripped? |

Is the previous prices for your au you have in your signature?
If so these diff gears i saw yesterday scrolling through the forum! You'll have to go down a little bit in the listing http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11299333 I do not know the owner of these gears but they are supposedly brand new! When it comes to diff's it isn't cheap because a lot of labour is involved and it is a specialist's job. I recommend you visit/call some more diff places and get some more prices just to compare on! If you are in Sydney area, i can recommend you to a good mechanic that specializes in diffs/gearbox's Cheers ED Ford Falcon

nah in melbourne unfortunetly, and i have rung around but the problem is, i am driving to canberra in the next two days and cant realy take it to another shop so...
And supposevly trans-diff is a great place to get you diff service/reco so ill wait for one more phone call. |

allrighty so it is getting done, ended up finaly got it down to $1250 with existing gear ratio...
Now everyone sais that you have to run it in for 500k-1000k is this tru? also i seen the other post but do you relay need to change the oil after 1000K ? Thanks |

yep its true need to drive the car to a max speed of 80ks for 1000km then you need to take it back for a flaush

so what is the go with the oil anyway, is it becuase of the wear and tear of the first 1000k that contaminates it?

hmmm ill see what he sais but remember im not changing the gears and its a reco LSD not a new one...
But i guess it still needs to be worn in haha this is gonna be funny then driving all the way to canberra at 80km an hour haha |

Reconditioned is new parts in old casing,rebuilt is rebuilt and could be old parts pulled apart and put back together..Fine line with these words when it comes to mechanics.
So is it getting new clutches ect or is it a 2nd hand low km LSD? My diff in the BA cost just over 3K to build and thats with original gears,just trying to make you feel better. |

Good lord!
You could have brought a written off XR6 for that price and raided it. I hope its all working well, I would have sourced a XR diff and swapped it over. But atleast you know yours in all new I guess.

i would like to, but i asked them if i where to put some different gears in later he is telling me that it would need another re-trace, dont think it will need another one of them, but they are appealing haha we will see how it goes

Gears will need to be marked up again ect so yes another retrace is in order if going down that path.What makes you think it wont need another?

well from my understanding, a re-trace gets rid of all the crap and includes new barings, if i only had a re-trace done like 3000-4000k ago, wouldent it still be clean?

Nah your right i would get one, but we will see how it goes, i might not REALY need 3.9 ratio's anyway 3.08 will be fine, im not building a racecar haha

Yes you do need 3.9s. You need 4.11s or 3.9s trust me ask anyone who's done the mod

ok picked the car up and drove it home, all seems good, the guy said i only needed to baby it at 80k for first 300k just for the barings, but he said they used a second hand cramble and hammy so they are allready worn, the diff has been completely painted black(not sure what thats for) and yer
All seem good so far |

it came to 1250 inc GST they said the centre was realy realy worn and shiny so it had to be replaced so yer Just glad it is back on the road and they ofer 12 months warranty even though its second hand so im happy |

ive had to get a brand new diff when a spider gear tooth went inside my lsd unit and wrecked everything, i paid 2200 for brand new lsd which they pulled apart and strengthened and brand new 3.45's which i already had in the car, now i want 3.9's so il have to pay the price for labour to set it all up again. at least its a reliable diff i spose

allrighty, just noticed driving it around ive done nearly 100k so far at below 80k and there is a slight noise coming from the back of the car, has to be either the diff or barings. its like a rubbing sound every rotation of the wheels, is this normal with new or rebuilt diffs and barings?
