Default Smartlock/ Smartshield (Series 1 to 1.5) HELP!!!

Ok..
Seems I may have hit a snag.. not a big snag, but a snag none the less..

The TS50 that I am getting the gearbox and ecu out of for the ESS conversion is a 12/99 build..
My car is 4/99 build..

Now, from what I can see and remember, it seems the TS50 is a series 1.5 and has smartshield.. Mine is a series 1 and has smartlock..

What I want to know is..
If I put the TS50 (series 1.5) ECU into mine when I put the gearbox in, will the car start..?
Is smartshield run by the ECU or the BEM or is it a combined thing..?

Will I need to convert my car to smartshield to run the TS50 ECU...?

Will I need the BEM and key from the TS50..?

Will any wiring need to be changed..?

Should I just grab the whole lot and change the ECU, BEM, Key and barrel..?

Is there anything I have missed..??

Cheers Guys..!!

if you can it'd probably be easier to grab the whole lot. i'm sure someone else will know for sure if you can get your original bem paired to the new ecu.

Default Re: Smartlock/ Smartshield (Series 1 to 1.5) HELP!!!

You have a small memory don't you kris.

It won't work.

Series 1 to 1.5 on my dash didn't work (ute's are 1.5, dash I got was a 1) . The smartshield light would flash ( I think, not sure actually) and the car wouldn't crank over at all. That was on both series 1 and 1.5 bem's.

I sent it to ford like this to get matched and they couldn't do it. Their words were "component miss match"

What I traced it down to was the bem and their is a comm's (serial data) channel that in series 1 goes from the ecu to the cluster.
In series 1.5 it runs to the bem as well.
I belive that was the only difference i could find. I will check my notes in the next few days (about an 1" high worth of papers)

I can tell you it wasn't easy to find.
I had both dash looms out and accessible, and went though pin by pin tracing where each wire went. I'm pretty sure I noted down all of the differences.

The good news is that it is only about 1 foot of wire. Bad news is the dash has to come out and apart to access it.

If you want I can try the series 1 fairmont bem in the ute on the weekend and see what it does.

Any other question, just ask. Happy to help out.

Cheers

[EDIT]Check the BEM colours. Your's should be olive and the TS a yellow.

Just the man I was hoping to hear from...!

Taking the whole dash out will be done as I need to do the blend door anyway...

So If I change the Fairlane loom to the TS50 dash loom and plug the TS50 ECU and BEM and change the key and barrel, It should start yeah...?

Thanks man..

I don't see why it wouldn't mate. If your going to the effort to swap looms, why don't you just put the TS dash in there?

But it can be done. That was my motto in the end. "I've spent enough time on this, IT'S GOING TO WORK"

I didn't come across any problems in the engine bay side of it. At least not series related. Just XL spec not getting certain wiring.

There's no difference between my dash asnd the TS dash man.. everything is the same and I have a TS50 cluster as well..
I'll change the loom, ecu, bem and key/barrel and go from there.. There can't be any component mis match if its all from the same car.. Also both mine and donor car are high series so I cant see much of a difference there..

Thanks again man..!

What I am saying, is to change the dash loom the dash has to come apart. Vinyl top separated form the plastic bottom. ala what the pic 2 above is. Plastic bottom is in the car

A lot easier to just put the TS dash in, if it's up to your standards.

Cheers

All sorted..
I've spoken to the guy I get my parts off and spoke to a head mechanic at Ford..
What I will be doing is swapping ALL the TS50 stuff (dash, loom, ecu, bem, key and barrel) into the fairlane.. By doing this it will all plug in and work perfectly..! Will be changing the key lock on the drivers door handle and central locking fob so i wont have to have 2 keys for the lane..

IT WILL WORK!!! haha

Thanks for all the help guys.. Glad I sorted this out before getting too far into it..
Much Appreciated..!

My advice is to remove your seats so that they aren't damaged as the dash is more large and awkward than heavy. Door trims too.

Same goes for ECU (you've got to change it anyway)

Column doesn't have to come out, but it does need to be dropped.

That's about all of the special points I can think of.

Cheers

I will be changing the coloumn too as it's easier than changing the barrel and key and clock spring seperately.. You know, just all in in one hit..!!

Thanks for the advice again mate..!

Well having done a dash only a week ago I can say pulling the front seats, door trims and center console will make the lifting it out a lot easier. I would also detach the column near the firewall (1 x 10mm bolt and spring clip. this way the entire column will come out with the dash). Be carefull the plstic of the dash in the middle under the windscreen doesn't snap off. I would make sure it has released from the insulation on the firewall. I didn't do fhat and broke a little bit off. If you like I will get some photos tonight as the dash is sitting in the shed.

Ok, Lucky last questions..

Is there any difference in the Series 1 loom and series 1.5 loom..?

I mean, will I be able to plug the ECU, BEM and dash with Dash loom and there won't be any different plugs, or leftover plugs for that matter...?

This is where I'm at atm...

Just thinking about the plugs I think they will all be the same except for one. I could easily be wrong but the plug which goes on the crash module for the later wiring loom I think will be a square plug and the earlier ones are a rectangle plug. Looking at that last pic the crash module is an earlier one with the rectangle plug.

As I said I could be wrong but I changed the loom on 2 dashes the other week. The series 2 loom had the square plug and the series 1/1.5 (yellow bem) had the rectangle plug.

Hope that all makes sense.
