Okay, so a stupid simple question, but here goes...
What size sump plug gasket is needed on an EB Series 1? And do I use a metal or cork gasket? Thanks, and as they say, "there is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers." |

Nearing 300,000kms.
I only ask about the sump plug gasket, because who ever last did a service on the car figured it was optional... |

lol, it must have been leaking pretty good then....
um, im pretty sure its a metal or fibre gasket.. looks somewhat like a washer on the sump plug...... Last edited by LUXO_8; 12-07-2005 at 12:02 AM. |

Leaking just a little bit...
Not as much as you'd expect, but I'm trying to isolate a power steering leak, so it's not making things easier.

If its the same across all 3.9/4.0 E series sixes then the sump plug gasket for the EB is a white plastic ring. Cheap as, I grabbed a heap at a time from Ford to keep in the shed. Even the 5.0L uses the same.

run a bead of silastic around plg at base of thread wait till it goes off slightly then screw in you dont really need to use a gasket

I agree about the silastic. Locks it in place and stops any leakage. Use lots of it.
Stripped a thread once (poor thread fit and crossed) and also had one come loose and leak oil. |

hmmm silastic and oil is not good together though... Id go one of the plastic washers from ford.. they are pretty cheap too..

Thanks for the suggestions, think I'll go for the silastic option. I just found a new bottle hiding in the garage, so makes for the cheaper/easier option too...
With a bit of luck, I'll find that bloody power steering leak. I think it'd be the pressure switch, but spose I'll find out soon enough! |

Never known anyone to use silicone as it's messy and you don't want to get into the oil.
The cheapest possible gasket (and it's not dodgy) is card. ie cerial box. Works perfectly. No mess no fuss and free As far as oil, I wouldn't go 30, I'd use HPR 50. A mate has 330,000 on his EB and it runs 50 perfectly.

Ended up going with a brass washer with a bead of silastic. Doesn't seem to be leaking at all, which is an improvement...! That silastic I found in my garage? Been sitting there less than six months, and it had completely set. Good for a laugh, typical though.
Found the source of the power steering leak too; the pressure switch. Does anyone know how much they go for? And how much of a pain they are to replace? Will be nice to stop having little patches of oil up and down my driveway... bloody fords!

around 40 to 50 $$$,lower the stabaliser bar first,,makes replaceing the switch bloody easy.

i don't have a gasket on mine and it does NOT leak.
Might chuck some cardboard on it next time i dump the oil.

For parts like that Ford Spares is almost always well priced. That's where I'd go personally.

Bloody $60 for a pressure switch at Ford, stuff that. Nearly as bad at Repco for a non genuine one, and had to put up with the rude bastards. Ended up going to Bursons, $30ish with a trade discount.

My pressure switch gave a fault code so I removed the plug from the socket and bridged the terminals with a piece of wire. That is the normal condition for no pressure on the steering and the idle control seems to compensate. May not be OK if the idle speed is very low.
Think the car runs better now. |
