Default Out of the renting game

Well today i got the keys for my house. Its been a huge few months to get it all done and i even had the finance deal fall through at one stage but i am very happy now and its been worth every bit of trouble.
I hand the keys back on the house we are renting on monday so its going to be a very busy weekend.
Has anyone else just made the move from renting to buying?
Anything i need to take care of?
cheers all
j

Yep, did it in Feb.
Feels great to own your own home. Been busy ever since painting and gardening and cabling and fixing things up and spending money on small things...

Ahh, the joys of owning your own home.

Congrats on buying you own piece of the Great Australian Dream.

Remember to insure your place, and the contents. WOuld be nothing worse than taking off for a nice romantic dinner and find some lowlife has knocked off all of your stuff, or going on holidays to see your place burning merrily on the 6:00 news.

Our bank said that we had to have home and contents insurance sorted out before they would lend us the money.

We just did the same back in feburary as well mate! My parents, my brother and I (yes we all still live together and for all of us this is our first home). The best way we could get out of renting was to pool together and buy a house. And when it comes time to move out, my parents will by then be able to buy my brother's and my share out (dont worry, may sound dodey to some but we set ground rules and exact details out so that it is a fair arrangement). This way all of us get out of renting and what would have been dead money is now getting put into an investment as such. We managed to get a half decent house. The only problems with the house seem trivial compared to some of the houses we have seen.

But in saying that what does need fixing is slowing getting fixed as we go alone.... Sorry for taking the spot light there. So congrates mate, will be the best thing you ever did! One more thing you need to do is when you are settled, christen the house with a party to celerbrate the occasion...all the grog can be on the guests!

And dont forget to change the locks on the house as well. If the original vendor finds a spare set or two they may end up in the wrong hands.

Congrats on your new purchase, my advice would be to divert your mail to your new address.

Congrats.

Just notify all your billing companies (vicroads too).

Your ISP may charge you a few hundred or so for changing location.

And so the big move begins....
Last night we packed up most of the house for the move today. We have 3 cars with trailers ( big box cage ones ) and a tandem to move the cars from the back yard. If everything goes to plan i will be sitting out the back haveing a few cans at about 7pm tonight.
Cheers for all the helpfull hints.

Yep, the wife has me lined up for an evening of painting tonight. We hope to finish off the family room tonight so we can start on the lounge room on the weekend. That is, if I'm not busy pulling down the shade cloth on the side of the house which has started to fall down as the wood has rotted away. Not to mention the cabling of extra TV antennae points and data (network) points that I want to do along with some extra power points. Coupled with digging up the garden and pulling out all the weeds.
The list continues...

Well we are in and its going great. We have most of the house settled in and it feels great to get back to normal life and not live out of cardboard box's.
Thanks for all the advise and tips guys.

Good on you .. Just remember PAY mortgage first and be careful spending on doing it up too much.. Get settled and use to paying mortgage .. I have seen too many people loose everything...
House first.. white goods, car, renovations last...Paint and tidy up and general maintenance is good value...
IMO you are buying at the right time...
Though there are tough times ahead. I think we are at its peak though!!!

I think we will be right with all that sort of thing. We allready have all the white goods and cars we need for now and for the reno's we are going to tackle one room at a time and not go overboard. I have seen a lot of mates try to take on a whole house reno and it nearly always ends in a bad way.
