Not as ugly as I expected, April figures will be very interesting. For Toyota to grow sales again is stunning in this climate. Here’s been reports and innuendo of shutdowns for a month now, I’d have thought most people would t have been willing to spend money on or finance new cars.

Holden: 5000 (+30%)
Ford: 4,800 (-21%)

By golly, Holden had a super strong month selling down the last of their stock
Ford down a bit for sure but maybe the real market hits are still coming....

For us, we didn't notice a decline until the middle of the third week of March and then definitely in the last week of March. The last few days of March and then these first few days of April, it's like someone has closed the gates, it's literally been a trickle.

Maybe the March figures only reflect the first 3 weeks of the month? April will be very interesting indeed and could be worse than March, especially when these restrictions are for the next 3 months at least.

I work for a multi-franchise dealer group and it really has been devastating, with the amount of people either retrenched or stood down without pay until further notice. I've been one of the lucky ones. I'm still working, but now on a roster.

Even though the lockdown laws aren't as strict here in SA when compared to VIC, NSW and QLD, people aren't going out and the last thing they're buying, is a new car.

Absolutely... The real kick is sadly still to come, April through to at least October I'd say with the restrictions in place, mass loss of jobs etc, indiscriminate spending has stopped,
Everyone is now looking at their bank balances and really questioning how they spend in case the worst case scenario happens and they loose their jobs,
I'd not be surprised if some of the smaller sellers actually take their bat n ball n go home tbh.

Holden's February orders were apparently invoiced in March, so the discounting could take effect.

The amount of Holden dealer employees, family and friends buying Holden's is pretty big too at the moment. Most dealers are giving staff / friends of staff 90% of the bonus which means they are getting some cracking deals.

April will be a shocking month, a few dealers in QLD have shut the doors, one Mercedes dealership has closed till 1 June.

Actually, for the dealership here we were showing excellent signs in the first 2 weeks of March - in fact we were tracking well ahead of what was required. I suspect this was the case for the market in general - and the numbers show this.

Reminds me of that 'Going out of business' store in Adam Sandler's 'You don't mess with the Zohan'.

It's not actually closing it's just good marketing for sales

Except Holden is actually done

Reminds me of a local rug store that is known for having more closing down sales than Elvis had hits

A couple of times a year, without fail. I reckon i've seen at least 10-15 closing down sales at the place over the last decade.

March is also the last month of the japanese financial year. So usually a good month for Japanese brands before a fall off in april.

The whole Jeep range was outsold by the Ram. 262 vs 258

Jeep may as well pack up and go home. Brand is cancerous.

Jeep just signed its dealers to a 10 year franchise agreement.

That would be an apparent Persian carpet mob? a lot like a kitchen mob often having a liquidation sale.

-18% for the month makes Toyota's performance even more impressive.

Rams are as reliable as Jeeps. Give it a few years and Ram sales will nose dive.

Jeep make good cars, but they just don't build them very well. Having said that I have had 2 jeeps over 100,000kms of driving with no issues.

Once job losses from Covind 19 really hit, car sales will really dive. Not a good time for any car dealer. Or any of us. We must all come together and weather the chinese storm.

Mustang sales were decent last month. The next best competitor in that segment, the BMW 2 Series, only sold 38 for the month.

I get the feeling the Mustang sales are bolstered by service loan cars and Ford employees.

Another interesting point, the gap between 1st and 2nd in most VFACTS categories is quite large.

For example,
RAV 4 2991 compared to Mazda CX-5 1734
Corolla 2812 to Hyundai i30 1856
Picanto 365 to Fiat 500 40

Have been told the facelifted Ram will be available next year but the price for a Laramie 1500 will be closer to what we pay for the current 2500. So it won’t be a cheap rig and this was before the dollar tanked against the US.

Good to see Mustang going strong. I’ve had a few through Hertz rental although the last few months Ive noticed less availability in Perth Melbourne and Sydney while daily hire has increased in price by around 50%.
This was before the current dramas set in and we were free to fly wherever.

R spec helped mustang for the month...

Ford does register a lot internally though.

Everest had a good month, people seem to love the “Sport” model.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Chrysler Jeep don’t exit Australia like Holden. I think the Australian auto market is going to have a big cleanse over the next few years. Too many brands and too costly to compete here with mainstream 5 year warranty and no money to be made out of finance. Very sad really.

Everest is a good car. It’s been let down by a few things in the early years... Chalk and cheese compared to a Prado but you can never talk a Toyota person around in my experience.

They quietly discontinued the Dodge brand in Australia about a year ago & nobody noticed.

It is very sad but the Aussie auto market has been bloated with too many brands for years. It's time for more to leave & let the others maintain a reasonable living. It's currently not sustainable, too many cars are been sold at very slender margins & long warranties.
