Default insulation

had a guy knock on the door today trying to sell me some insulation, he asked if i had any in the roof, when i said that i had, he then asked how old it was?
leads me to ask does the stuff lose and of its ability with age and if so after how long?

when i told him thanks but not thanks, he said but it was from the government.
he was none to happy tho

Depends on what insulation you have - the "cool and cosy" type of blow in insulation can get blown around in the roof cavity and it then looses it's effectiveness. (I've got that in my roof and it needs doing all over again)

But if you've got at least 3.5 rating batt insulation, then you have nothing to worry about (they do "settle" a bit over time but still retain most of their qualities).

Door to Door salesmen really get my goat - especially with this government rebate for insulation, there's a lot of fly-by-night contractors coming out of the woodwork.

Seen on sunrise that is a heap of houses that need to be 'redone' that have 'foil' insulation because of the threat of fire roughly 48000 homes. 9mill cost to taxpayers

There is a lot of dodgy stuff going on with home insulation at the moment, all due to the governments $1200 rebate thing. Lots of dodgy installers going around making a fortune on it. Was probably one of those that came knocking. canvasing areas.

info here.
http://www.environment.gov.au/energy...cy/insulation/

Home owners need to get two quotes, but most places will give you two quotes, 1 from each company they are running. Mate of mine is a builder and had his place done. two guys ran the bus, each of them had their own company name and bioth gave him a quote. one for $1500, the other for $1199.98.
He said there was about $300 worth of insulation that went in.

if you're in Melbourne and listen to 3AW, they were discussing this topic this morning.

4 installers have been KILLED in the past 6 months installing the insulation, thanks to the government rebate...

Basically, because any tom-dick-or-harry can start a business and roll it out... with no training or trade experience needed...

They're changing the laws now (after horse has bolted of course)... because 16year old kids with stapleguns were jumping into roofs, stapling foiled insulation into the roof, and shooting metal staples thru foil, into 240v power, and then being electrocuted by the charged insulation...

Good idea to begin with - but the rollout has been mis-managed and ill-though out...

Tread carefully with who you allow into your house and into your roof...

Its NOT the gov fault these guys are getting heat stroke and being electrocuted..
It's been going on for years..
Its all in the installation .. Not the gov...
Although it could have been done better...
The alu in the insulation come in contact with LIVE light wires..
This when the installers get elect shock..
Blaming the Gov is like blaming Ford or GMH for car accidents!!!
In one case the installer stapled the aluminium insulation straight through into live mains wuth a saple gun...
These installers are NOT qualified for the work they are doing...
Work cover and appropriate authorities have let this go for years..
I am in the elect industry .. There have been many elect shocks before this Gov subsidy ...

We got ours done a few weeks ago, it was the pulp layer stuff, I was home when they did it and made sure they didnt cover wiring etc and did a good job, then inspected aftewards. They were good blokes and the hot week we had last week, we did notice that the house was definately not as hot as any other hot day where it's locked up all day.

When I was in Rockhampton over xmas a couple of indian blokes rocked up in an 80's model Laser with a coles bag of tools and a roll of the insulation, used scissors to cut up the foil insulrap looking stuff and slid it through the manhole. It looked quite the professional organisation lol

Should also add that it is now mandatory to have an enclosure around all downlights inside your home (up in the roof). They put out a lot of heat and they quite commonly start fires through closely situated insulation

Had a fly-by-night guy give me his card and that he would do my house (as he was doing across the roads house that morning). Funny as I wondered why a 'rental' truck was parked out the front. That gave me great confidence.

I had one saying it was free when I turned him down - my thinking is why let some guy working for a company I've never heard of into my house and up in the roof. I am looking at getting insulation done, but I'll get it done by an established company selling known products to replace the loose fill that comes out every time I change one of the halogen lamps

must've been the day for it. had some indian looking fellow knock on my door babbling on about insulation and govt. i have insulation so i thought 'great, that will get rid of him' but then he comes out with 'its only good for 3 yrs'.

nothing irritates me more than sales people, whether at your door or on the phone, who can't speak english clearly and some hardly at all.

i hate shutting the door in peoples faces or hanging up on people but these people just don't take a hint.

Been a heap of houses burnt to the ground since the rebate came in as well; especially in Melbourne.

A lot of it due to insulation being placed over down lights.

But the question is who fault is that sparky or isulsator , i would imagine using a spray in insulation it would be quite hard not to get it near down lights .

Because i thought it was manditory for downlights to have a backing cover installed.

Yes they put covers over them.. Not hard .. Its better anyway it stops dust etc being sucked through every time a door is opened...
Sheesh all this stuff is common sense..
Yes its abit like car care products when you buy a new car...
If the insulation lasts ONLY 3 years then I'm NOT getting it...
Insulation lasts forever as long as it covers the surface its put on !!
Like these guys are experts in this field???

They're not and stapling the insulation to wiring and frying themselves. Not the sharpest tools, just the cheapest!
