Default Who here has ever see/owned a MK escort twin cam?

As the title says who here has even seen or owned a genuine Mk1 escort twin cam or RS 1600. I have been to many car showes over the years although I have never seen one other than in old black and white photos from the car magazines all those years ago. I know the Twin cams in Europe pull massive money I recently seen 2 RS1600 for £59,000. Which works out close to $120,000Au. I know the RS1600 was a bit more of a premium vehicle over the STD ford/ lotus engine as it was fitted with the BDA cosworth 1600. If anyone would like to share photo's or experiences it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Ryan

I owned a MK1 Twin Cam. Not to many photos though, put my money into TC not film. No mobiles in those days. I have a couple of pics which haven't been scanned yet and I'll have to find them.
It was arctic white with a black pin stripe along the top of the gaurds/panels. Black basket weave interia.
It was the greatest car I ever owned back then.

Was immaculate condition and a shock to me.
Belonged to some sales rep guy...

Over 10 yrs ago we had a club member with a genuine Twin Cam Mk1.
Mid metallic green, small snug-fitting bucket style low back seats with black interior IIRC.
Immaculate, won prizes everywhere he went. Awesome piece or art.

Was sold to provide a house deposit (LOL !!!), and was apparently shipped back to England.

How mine came to an end:
A night with the girlfriend at Dundas Drive In 1975.
Heading back to Eastwood in the rain, doing about 60ks. A car heading towards us turns right across our path. Swerve to the right to miss T boning him and "stuff me" there's another car behind him turning right.
Cant touch the brakes due to speed and rain.
Swerve to the left, behind first idiot, and am heading straight for an open grassed park. Not so bad, not. Jump grassed gutter into park.
Then realise heading straight for a recently installed temp road sign, held in place by two 4x4s.
Start feathering the brakes and trying to vere to the left (down hill). Finally arrive at the sign......and just get it.....right headlight/ guard collects left 4x4, guard buckles and pushes into door, buckling door. Post begins to push over in soft wet soil. Right front wheel begins to climb post. Car climbs post at 45 degs and back beaver digs into dirt and buckles out.
Car now in air at 45 degs. Sits there for a few seconds and falls over onto left side, pushing in left mudguard, door, rear quarter and buckles roof.
Only panel not damaged rear right quarter!!!!!!!! But wait, car falls back onto wheels and rear right quarter gets smashed by the post.
Boot lid immaculate.
Ended up puting the close ratio gearbox into a Canstell Roadster, selling the engine to a guy to use in something like a formula Ford of whatever uses twim cam motors. And sold the body to another person who was keen on fixing it.
Amazing thing was this all happened at probably about 20ks by the time we hit the post.
First idiot does a runner, second guy stops to see if where all ok.
Saddest thing ever I loved that car.
It had twin 45s, D grind cams, no govenor and would rev off the tacho in first second and third. Forth gear (due to wind resistance) would only rev to about 6 or 6.5 RPM from memory. Used to do runs up the F4 and 90mph in 3rd but would only get to about 115MPH in 4th, going from about half throttle to full throttle in 4th would just make no difference at that speed.

WTF are those rims on the last one....

The interesting thing is road spec cars look pretty standard until you pop the bonnet.

Easily changed obviously but yeah it just looks like a hot wheels car with the first ones.

Used to see a few in my youth when I had my Ford hardtops tuned by Miller racing, a tuner nearby called Peter Backhouse specialised in them and they were great machines.
Also used to enjoy watching Michael Stillwell kill some of the giants in sports sedans on a good day.
I think it may have been the same car Glenn Seton drove a while ago before he got into TCM in the mustang. What beautiful little cars they and their bigger cousins cortinas were.

"115 mph at 1/2 throttle in top gear"? ? Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

That is the truth. In the early seventies when I had mine and it was still possible to cruise at high speed with no fear of being detected, it was a normal thing to be sitting on 100mph with the accelerator just about right off. Twin webers, 1 choke per cylinder, it had plenty of air, and if one stabbed the throttle at this speed the car would fairly leap ahead.

I'd tend to agree with this. My old Mk2 2L Escort was capable of a top speed of approx 165kph. This could be achieved at approx 2/3 - 3/4 throttle. No additional revs or speed gain with full throttle, just more noise & most likely more fuel.

Hi all - first post. I've had two twin-cams. The first I bought new when they were first released. Two came to WA and I had the choice of Burnt Orange or Metallic Dark Green. I chose the orange. I bought it to rally and had quite a bit of success until I wrote it off in a rally in 1974 (with quite a bit of damage to me too). A few years later I bought a second-hand maroon one and used it as a daily driver for 10 years until I sold it.

Brilliant cars. Fantastic power and balance and highly competitive (in those days) straight off the showroom floor.

Prior to the twin-cam I rallied an XR GT Falcon (!) and before that a genuine GT500 Cortina. I've had some nice Fords in the past and only wish I still owned them as I'd be a richer man.

Robert - that's a decent hit, must have really hurt. I'd take the GT500 if you still had it. Both great performing little cars.

You should like to work out what twin 45s will flow? They would more than fuel my S/C'd 351.

Back in the early 70s, roads were virtually deserted at night. you'd be lucky to pass another car during the week on the F4 after 9pm.
We regularly (on a Tuesday night) would drive to Wisemans Ferry Pub have a beer and drive back, three or four cars, flat chat, use whole road and see no one till you got to near Pennant Hills. There was no street lights and it was an old windy road.
Its just how it was back then. The F4 was the first high quality divided road that was straight for miles. The Gosford tollway was earlier but was very windy and hilly.

Gotta say I did a lot of learning in that TC Escort.
The crank pulleys used to fly apart, they were spot welded together. So I searched around and Lynx engineering made a billet solid steel pulley for me.
The motor was fully balanced and had a lightened flywheel (probably to light) again by Lynx.
With the close ratio box and lighted FW used to have to ride the clutch to leave the traffic lights and get across the intersection and up to about 20ks before you could let it right out.
OR:...Rev it up to about 3.5KRPM and drop it. It would just hook up and spins and smoke right across the intersection untill you had to change at about 8k rpm. First time this happened was a complete accident. After that ...........

Now for the bummer:
Sunday nights used to be coffee shop night at Beecroft. All the local girls and lads would met for a coffee. Anyway decided to do a bit of a skid leaving and accidently left it in reverse. After a very short spin in rev (hardly moved) into first and off....big problem driving home, clutch pedal is pulsing in and out and engine seems to only want to idle home, any more throttle just make horrible noises.
So the next weekend take off the box and bell housing....looking at the back of the motor something doesn't look right....****** there's no flywheel. True the flywheel is in the bell housing. All but one flywheel bolt sheared and the other pulled out and had been rotating around and catching in its hole. This is what got me home.
Back to Lynx...for a dowled and repaired crank and flywheel.
I have a few more stories...but thats later.
