Default VCT Solenoid

So my VCT Solenoid is leaking. To replace it is $299 rrp. Has anyone pulled it apart and replace an internal O-ring or anything to reseal it and stop my oil from leaking out.

Any feedback would rule.

Best bet would be to ring Bruce and ask him what he would do.

Dude, All I am saying is call him and ask, not get him to the do the work, just ask what he would do. Most of the time they will tell you over the phone. What's the worst he is gonna say? no? Just move on and ask someone else like Darren.

not trying to be rude, but what kind of answer is that?

i mean, people sign up to this forum due to the invaluable info, and if someone does a search on how to fix their leaking VCT mechanism (lack of better word?) they will stumble on this thread to find the solution "go ask bruce"

again, not trying to flame.

If the best advice is to recommend them to an experienced person, how is that a bad thing....?

hahahahahaha. i really like the VCT though because its different. obvs down side of that is not many ppl have done much with it so i kinda feel like im in uncharted waters. which i know im not but you get what i mean. one day i'll get my self a rebel 220 manual. but i want a WRX 1st.

anyway. pulled it out. doesn't look like there's much to do really i put some silastic on the plug side near where the face's join to see if that does much. will probably end up getting a new one someday i can get one at trade for about $250. but i think my cars still leaking.

No flaming taken.

Under the circumstances, it was the best answer to suggest to hand the issue over to a person who is experienced in this area rather than give him a guesstimate answer or a shot in the dark reply, or worse yet, waiting for a reply on the forums. That way he gets his answer faster, from a person who knows and it still doesn't cost him.

Getting one from a wrecker as a replacement? Is just as much of a gamble the unit is going to be at least 10yrs old and they'd probably want a stupid amount of money for it do I figure may as well replace it.

I called a mate in syd whose done a fair bit with VCT's and he has no info. Should give Bruce a call

Parts been replaced!! Looks like the unit was leaking from the seal as well as the plug so here's to hoping one of my leaks jog on!!!
Also Noticed car seemed to fire up a lot easier but it was still warm. Tomorrow morning will be my 1st gauge of how that aspect went. And time will tell for leaks.

good stuff, look forward to see what difference it makes.

speaking of vct, i got myself a vct head from a taxi in pick a part, it was disgustingly dirty on the out side, i might add it had a loose idler pulley on the front i suspect where a shed load of oil leak was coming from, but it looked very good on the inside, when i got it home i noticed it had warranty plug in the back of the head.......you little beauty , $115.00 , cam rocker gear and head, it`s nice to have a win now and again .

head or motor? in the S1's i think the idler pully's sometimes got drilled to deep and hit an oil ahh Jacket? and they'd gush oil no matter what.
all in all the VCT motors are prone for oil leaks.
BUT. i've herd they heads flow pretty well and are ported a fair bit. thats why to port them more you really need a decent size cam in them. (which is pretty hard to find anyway. hahaha) and then turbo them makes them good.

good you got some improvement,
i have to say while removing the head off the taxi fairlane, i saw quiet a few dodgey oil leak repairs, it matched up with the rest of the car, the radiator support panel was nearly cracked through from being poorly repaired after fender bender/s , as far as the oil leaks go on the VCT, i think half the battle is finding where it`s actually leaking from,

it`s very deceiving and there a few possible spots it can leak from, in my case i sealed and did everything except the timing chain tensioner o ring, as i had looked at it and it appeared leak free, i thought i must have stuffed the job up sealing something,
it was`nt until some time passed and i did the whole job again that i ran my hand below the chain tensioner adjuster and found it leaking(****ing out), a 50 cent o ring later and no more oil leaks.
mine is starting to get a little stumble off the line now and agin, i`m thinking it might be time for plugs and leads, i think the last set i put in for both was about 110,000 k`s ago, possibly coil pak too.
let us know how you go with your limo.
