Hi there,
I’ve got an Electric Steering Rack I need install on my Ford Focus 2011 (LW). I originally thought it might be too hard. But I’m now keen to learn more about steering/mechanics in this area. I’ve done engine work before (eg removed intake manifold etc) I’m not sure if this it allowed, but is there anyone in Sydney who’s keen to assist in the process? I’m happy to contribute in some way (whether financial or otherwise- eg my technical knowledge in apps/software). Anyone interested? |

Seeing as no one interested in the above, can anyone recommend a person/place to do this in the Sydney area?
Thanks |

Sorry a bit late.
How did you go with this? I've got a Focus from the same year. My electric power steering failed, which I understand is relatively common with the earlier full-electric systems. I ended up replacing it myself, with a rack which I got from a wreckers. Not having my own hoist, it was a bit of a nuisance doing this, as I had to take the entire subframe out. Although I am somewhat familiar with Forscan, it turned out that the rack did not appear to need any special programming to work with my car. In the end, glad I did it. A ford dealer quoted $5k. (more than 1/2 the value of the car) The rack cost me $1100 |

Hi!
Well done in doing it yourself. I found it extremely hard to do without a hoist- particularly removing the side arms & ball joints. But with help from a mechanically minded friend & a couple days work- we got there. I paid ~$1000 for the new rack (from a power steering specialist), but I’m little paranoid it could happen again… any thoughts on that? Since replacing it, I get the “Hill Start Assistance Failure” error when starting the car. I checked the ABS & brake sensors, but no luck. Any ideas? |
