'$45 Billion National Broadband' tops 'Flood Repairs' as priority!

At the handing down of the 2010/11 Australian federal budget in May 2010, The Gross Australian federal debt was at $139 billion. Now Julia Gillard is trying to convince tax payers to cough up!

Julia Gillard last week promised the legislation of a $1.8 billion flood tax to be tabled, to take effect from July 1.

Julia Gillard said that nothing would stop her from introducing it and to implement it post haste as a second priority to the National Broadband Network.

Victorian Farmers Federation president Andrew Broad slammed the plan along with the Greens.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott demanded that the $45 billion National Broadband Network be scrapped immediately. Mr Abbott maintained the the levy was not necessary. "There is fat in the budget"

-A Flood levy and ETS prove that Labor simply cannot afford to build school programs, broadband networks or any costly 'Carbon Tax' infrastructure; and certainly not right now.

Many voters will be deeply suspicious about giving any extra cash to this government, especially if it comes with the mildly alarming promise it will be used on nation-building projects.

I personally don't have an issue with paying the flood levy tax, so long as it goes where they're telling us it's going. However, it bugs me that the government would put building a broadband network ahead of rebuilding Queensland. Couldn't they just put it back another couple of years?

Gotta wonder where their priorities are. And as with any other tax, once this new one is introduced, it will always be there. Just typical.

Doesn't matter whose in power these days, be it Liberal or Labor, they're as bad as each other. Full of empty promises and always more than willing to extract more money out of it's people for whatever reason.

or at least halve the money going overseas in aid, and at least temporary appoint it to rebuilding Australia disasters...

broadband network is overdue imo, although rebuilding qld is more important, but we could just scrap other programs, or cut back how much we send overseas in aid?

The ................ (insert opposition)has labeled it as irresponsible, and claimed they would do it differently if they were in power.

I am sorry, I really am, being a Victorian, have seen floods, storms, bushfires the same as any other states, but we can't just put something else on hold everytime a natural diaster happens, we'd never get anything done.

If they are smart about it, while rebuilding some of these ravaged towns/cities they could also be doing the rollout of the national broadband network. Which is long overdue, we are disadvantaging ourselves againist the other countries of the world that are taking our jobs.

Hell, they can do both at the same time, creates more employment! More employment means less people on government money, means money can be used to help these people effected. As said above, whilst I feel sorry for other countries, we need to look after ourselves first as well.

We will be left behind if the governments cannot work together, and to me, they can't, one suggests something, the other says no way just because they are the oppersition.

What it really means is that next time there is a natural disaster or something people wont donate because they'll think Gillard will add a tax in again or something. And at the end of the day people only have so much money they are willing to give.
