Default Internet fraud...

hey all!

guess what happened to me..

i had 3 and a half grand pinched from my bank account! sent to some1 that i never knew about...

on the upside, ive only got 100 bucks to my name till my next paycheck, and it could take up to 4 weeks after i show them screenshots of my virus free pc and get stat dec's done etc...

it also happened to my mum for 4300 bucks...

anyone heard of this happening?

cheers,

santo

yes, which bank was this?

Commonwealth have a new system that has come out, you register an sms alert whereby if one of your bank accounts transfers money to a previously unknown 3rd party account it sends a code to your mobile to input into the website before the transaction can be done

To be blunt, I have NFI how people fall for that. Unless somehow a virus gets on your comp that tracks usernames and passwords; even then programs like adware and AVG are free....

With a virus free computer as he said, the only way is to give the username/password to someone.

Just like the myspace spam, it comes from people being tricked into giving their details on fake pages.

Even commbank has a safety thing whereby if you try to transfer to a new account, it'll ask you for security questions.

What bank are you with Santo?

Santo, Dont fill out a form telling them about your computer. Like if u have xp, ur isp, when ur last scan was etc. Your digging a hole so they dont have to pay you the money.

Just show them screen dumps of Lavasoft, and a "Real" Virus scanner. Never ****in use AVG free, I did a test, Ran AVG free on a PC it showed it as clean, ran E-trust 10mins later found 11 virus's.

Really people its less than $100 these days a year to buy a real virus scanner, so bloody do it, that $100 could save you $1000's

On another note, it happens easy, people go to websites n stuff, get a Adware/Trojan cause QHOST or something simlar, it redirects your DNS to point you to their website when you go to any banking site.

Also always mate sure theres a padlock in the bottom right corner when going to "secure" websites, and read the address bar to make sure the website address is correct not some different site that looks werid.

Also Firefox 2.x and IE 7 have Pilsing Filters which detect web forgery

im a pc techy,
ive seen this done once before. only with a larger amount of money.
it turned out the customers "clean" pc was not clean at all....he had one nasty cleaver little worm which caused the whole drama, which he clamed was a clean pc.
heres a free tip.....a pc is never a clean pc until the hdd has been removed from the offending pc and scanned by multiple scanners on a clean pc.

b.t.w.
we sell a very good antivirus program called BITDEFENDER for $35 per year.
im one of the australian resellers of it.

norton scored 54%
bitdefender 97%
avg 86% i think it was

Firewall = zonealarm
antivirus = bitdefender
once a fortnight run adaware & spybot s&d

then ull have a clean pc.....ohh and stop visiting PORN sites....number 1 place for viruses

they blame it on most probably a trojan, like a keylogger that has recorded keystrokes...

i wouldnt fall for one of those scam emails, and it is with ANZ.

The funny thing is that particularly with my mum's case, after the transaction was made they knew something was suss and shut her account down, so they knew something was going on.

my biggest problem is that i use A LOT of torrent stuff like azureus, so had to have minimal firewall settings...

i've got trend working away..

the whole thing is just a big pain in the ***...

i'm with bendigo. and to log on i have a little black thing that generates a random number each time. also to transfer to another account it has to be entered. only thing that you can do without it is transfer between my accounts.

im with anz and have had no problems.
however im a little worried about minimal firewall and bit torrents.
get a firewall asap....zonealarm is pretty easy to use and best of all...free.
hmm im also a little worried about where u r taking it.
i dont know what you are paying but ill give u an idea of what my boss charges....

virus / spyware removal
updates to windows
firewall installation and configuration
various other patches and updates
$100 inc g.s.t

given the work we actually do to the system that customers dont see its very good value....minimum turn around time is 2days.....1 total day is lost in scanning alone.

hope this helps

Default I'm with westpac

When you log in to westpac internet banking you input you client number by keyboard but the password using your mouse this way no key stoke recording worm can get your password.

In Poland (where I come from) my internet bank sent me a list of single use passwords and requested a randomly chosen one to confirm any new destination account when transferring money, other bank sent you a new password on your registered mobile by sms prior to new transfers.

and one more thing: we can't give up visiting porn sites !!!

why risk your pc on porn websites when u can download clean movies via bit torrent.....cough cough hehe

using a mouse adds a little security but at the end of the day that system is only as good/smart as the inventor.

crack and porn sites cause 90% of problems.....the other 10% is those emails that keep coming thur about "updating our banking system".

if you gonna surf porn sites....dont have internet banking.....or use a seperate computer NOT a different user account for the porn and a DIFFERENT PC for banking.

what files/programs do you torrent, to be honest untrusted sources most of it, I am not surprised you have a problem.

This is great unless you have someone looking over your shoulder. I didn't like it the first time that I had to use it, and I still don't like it. Especially when i have to log in at an Internet Cafe or alike.

It wouldn't be hard to take a photo of your client number when it was on the screen and just watch someone type in their password, i know i can't use the mouse as quick as i can type.

the mouse idea is great, avoids keyloggers...

at the end of the day ill get it back, so im not too worried,

and with my staff discount a year subscription for trend micro for 3 pc's cost me around 70 bucks..

im not too worried, just a shame... and an inconvenience..

Make sure you don't use Internet Explorer. I mean, you can keep using it, but do your banking in Mozilla or Opera or something more secure. I hate to seem like a biased person, but you really can't trust IE no matter how safe it claims to be. Most people use it, and most people target it.

it wont matter what browser you use if you got a keylogger or trogen.
theres no quick fix for something like this....take it to the source....the virus
the only difference between IE and all the others is the transfer security....and even that wont matter....just use a packet sniffer....same thing u use on wireless....all you do is track a few packets....sense the packet security and then descamble the rest of the packets...as i said...only as smart as the one who invented it.
just my 2 cents

That's true, but it can prevent many of these things from happening. Of course, if it is something you download, well then you ought to scan it, and then it's your problem.

Well if that is the extent they go to, then there's not much you can do to stop them. If they want it, they will take it.

to avoid ANY dangers to internet fraud or hacking you MUST have a good virus protector.. AVG is the best free to download one and it will secure your PC!! if you must download DO NOT use LimeWire or BearShare- the safest programs to use are SoulSeek or BitTorrent which can be downlaoded easily.. once you get AVG it will scan the computer for all infected files from viruses and heal them..

No Limewire hey? Why is that? I use it fairly frequently so I hope I'm not causing msyelf trouble. Used to use bearshare, but found it to be pretty crappy.

i've complimented westpac reps on there push key password system, it's brilliant, although i don't like people wandering around behind me when i'm "keying" it in lol
