Default Should Aust have C.A.F.E laws

Should a USA style Corporate Average Fuel Economy be introduced for cars sold new in Australia ?

In the USA there is a rule which factors in the type of car (Truck/commercial ...etc) and if any company exceeds the CAFE fiqure then there is a $ penalty applied ($5.50 per 0.1 mpg multiplied by the total annual sales figure).
Here is a link with how it works:

No need, just burn down the Ford and Holden factories and sell off the land as a toxic waste dump.

Much less paperwork.

Why? What's wrong with the Euro emmisions standards? Make better cars, don't penalize the customers for buying what is out there.

they should just leave it be, as the cost of living rises including the cost of fuel, people will choose what ever car suits their economic circumstance, is it going to get better ? i doubt it not in a hurry anyway, if car companies want to sell cars they will keep making them more fuel friendly, governments can try and regulate and punish car companies all they like but people will buy what car suits them in the end and no greenie or polly will make it other wise imo.

I think they meant CAFE' laws.

As we all know, Seppo vehicles are renowned for their abundance of cupholders :

You're my new best friend

No-one needs fuel economy laws. They police themselves! If the US really wanted to do something about fuel consumption they would tax petrol and put the proceeds back into research.

Just another crock to raise funds - like the so-called "green house" credits etc.

Just thinking about it makes my blood boil - how many more ways are they going to dream up to bend over the motorist?

I need some release - I'm going out to buy another V8 - stuff them all!!
