Default Evap to reverse cyle aircons

hey folks, just wondering if anyone here has converted their old evap to a reverse cycle aircon using the current ducting, or is it even possible? Missus is over the hot weather in perth atm. Otherwise its a split system in the rooms.

If you go with a split system, consider a ceiling cassette.
Bang it in the largest room, normally dining/entertainment, cools most of the house quite well, just bearable.

I hear ya mate, we're in the same boat. Damn humidity, evap is near on useless.
We have a large refrig in our kitchen TV area, and just close off all the doors and veg out infront of the TV, but as soon as you go to the bedrooms, whew, melt.
I think you can do the conversion but very expensive, thats why, me being a cheapskate, went for 1 refrig unit.
Have a look at the ads they have in the TV guides from the weekend papers.

See if you can put up with it for a couple of months (autum/winter) that's when the prices plummet from around 14,000 to 9-10,000 for a large 4 x 2.

There is a place that will design the system for you and you can buy the ducting and extras from them.
I think in Kardinya/Myaree maybe??
Install yourself, grab a sparky/fridgy mate, save bucketloads.

We had full ducted reverse cycle air-con fitted about 6 months ago.
$9500 fully fitted removed and disposed of the two old splits. Cools our 4*2 house to cold any day. Fitted by Jarrahdale air in one day no dramas at all. Quotes are free get them out and ask about the ducting.

And Jarradale have decent full time installers as well.

Evap ducting is too big to run as a conversion. Most installers would want to replace the entire system rather that retro fit. Just rip the old swamp donkey out!!

Yep, massive advancement in duct types/insulation and electronic dampers for each room nowadays.
Out with the old and in with the modern.

You might want to try (or investigate trying) a larger fan motor in your evaporative system if you can. If you have a Breezair for example you can usually change to a larger wattage motor and re-gear it to give a much larger air volume output. It will make a noticeable difference in terms of cooling in this weather.

You can go too far and destroy the fan of course and you will have to be careful to leave enough windows open so the air can escape or you will blow your duct walls out or off their outlets.

Check with whoever sells spares for your system as you will often well find that there is a higher output fan motor designed for your existing evap box when more outlets are connected. You can usually also adjust the fan pulley diameter for the new motor so its spins faster. This will need to be set up by an electrician or if you know how using a clamp on ammeter to get the pulley size to match the new motor.

I found this out by accident. I have an 11 outlet Breezeair and when the motor failed the only one available was one designed for a system with more outlets (20 I think). When it's like this I set it to high and I have my own cooling mini-cyclonic wind. The extra air movement make a very noticeable difference on humid days like this. It's only when it's like this and when the dog does one of her noxious burnt rubber I set it to high. Even on the lower setting everyone remarks how much cooler our system is than theirs.

Higher output water pumps for these systems are also available but I have needed to go down that path yet. And if it's only for a few days a large solid block of ice in the evap roof box each day will make a real difference too (I used to do this in a previous house).

Note also the our Government has been threatening to separately power all refrigerative air conditioners so they can turn them off in peak consumption periods so refrigerated air may end up meaning no air when you most want it.

We used Jarrahdale to replace our Cool Breeze unit, notice a big difference in comfort levels even in the extreme heat, only issue is really high humidity days where we get a lot of condensation on the tiles. They could have converted the evap to refrigerated for our home, but didn't have 10K to spend and the wife was pregnant and a hot summer last year when the other air con bit the bullet.

Jarrahdale installers did a great job and we had an issue with the drain valve, phoned them up, fixed same day.

Yeah we've got one of those old school through the wall box air cons for our main room (3x1 duplex) and in there its fine, as soon as you go into another room you boil.

I like the cassette style ones, my Mum has a Fujitsu one at her house and its whisper quiet and cools quite well. Better than the stupid LG one she had thats like sitting behind a jet engine with all the noise to go with it.

But yeah, sick of these hot nights. Bleh.

swampy's are useless in the current conditions we are having,the ducting for your evap will be of much larger diameter (some 600 diameter) and therefore be useless on your new system,daikin are one of the best units to use and are good to deal with for after sales warranty issues (hopefully you don't need them)

We installed a special air underground system http://mb-soft.com/solar/saving.html google will tell you
Had an ac engineer design it and costs a fraction of the usual ac costs due to being a simple volume air fan , the air is moved through underground pipes getting a drop of 5 to 7 deg minimum and all you pay for is running the fan , it doesnt freeze you but its lots better than a swampy ad=nd way cheep
