Default South Park Steve Irwin and the Sting Ray

This is the lastest south park episode where the devil does a fancy dress party.
And steve irwin come in, It's been criticised as bad taste in some papers and bad timing, The episode wont be shown here for about 2 years the south park creators have said, They thought they might have gone a touch overboard this soon but it still ran.
Here is the link make your own minds up on it?.

Maybe the sting ray in his chest isn't something too laugh at.
In the U.S on entertainment tonight they said they mocked him with it. Thats where it all started it's been very quite here.

Maybe it's been a wile for them with no controversy.
They should have left the sting ray out of it and no-one would care then we wouldn't know and it would be here soon, But now it's 2 years away, They think it's bad enough too hold it back from Australia.
I haven't seen it for some time, I used too stick SBS on too watch the uk soccer highlights and south park was on after it, The one thing i haven't seen them do is make fun of someone's death or the way they died.

Bad taste - of course. But what isnt done in poor taste on that show?

It's one of those things... you cant cry foul just because they're taking the p*ss out of "one of ours". Look at the hypocrisy around Isaac Hayes and his tizzy fit about the writers taking the p*ss out of his religion. Yet it didnt bother him when they did the mormans, christianity, judaism...

Cheap laughs, i dont see the harm.

It may be bad taste but that is what this show is all about (and why it is so funny).

The creators of South Park dont seem to like Steve Irwin one bit (in a past episode it had him chasing and tormenting animals) so I guess it is them having another dig at him.

As much as I dont agree with their point of view (I am in fact strongly opposed to it), they still have a right to express their views as do we have a right to disagree with them. To do otherwise would mean we just become another Middle East or North Korea where everything is regulated.

That's my thoughts.
I admire South Park in the fact that they do and say what they believe. In Australia, shows like The Late Show and Full Frontal could no longer operate because some sensitive **** will claim they have been seriously offended blah blah, show gets pulled and there goes fun for us all.

I think it's a matter of choice. If you're offended by it, then don't watch it.

I look at the mockery of Steve Irwin in a positive way. Shows only imitate people of significance and those who made a difference.
We know Steve made a positive difference and this episode merely acknowledges it.
And really, that's all that matters.

This is not the first time you've made such a claim. Did they seriously get pulled from the air?

I attributed the downfall of full frontal, the D-generation's various shows, comedy company, Jimeon etc on the increasing snobbiness of Australia's sense of humour. Characters of the likes of Uncle Arthur were traded in for the likes of Friends. Kym Gyngell given the flick for Jerry Seinfeld. David Rabbitborough's analysis of the Australian suburbanite was not "cool" enough to retain the channel 10 and channel 7 crowd. No, they'd rather watch another USA sitcom.

If the decision to cease the production of such shows was indeed through fear of litigation, i doubt they would play all of these fantastic Aussie comedy shows on Pay TV.

This sort of thing is similar to a lot of other episodes they have made, but because its about steve irwin, aussies hero. We ark up about it because it something closer to us. Its no Osama or George Bush this time, its someone who hasnt done anything wrong and we knew "better"..

I think its on par with a lot of other episodes they have made but its just too soon and in bad taste at this point in time. I havent seen the episode to see how bad it is so i cant comment on it but that my opinion..

Didn't even sound like Steve, he didn't say 'Crikey'.

As the others have said South Park is like that with everyone, and its not as if they singled himout for special treatment.

Here is an earlier episode also with Steve.

South Park used to be funny and have some meaning. Now they seem to use celebrities in every episode just to get some publicity and outrage.

That's where a big part of the joke is - you have Satan saying it's too soon to a guy he thought was dressing up as Steve Irwin. Then he kicks him out for not being in costume. So they are aware they might be offending people, but did it anyway - true South Park style. The fans of the show will largely enjoy the episode, as I did - the rest can go watch family television.

The press has just heard about Steve Irwin being in the episode and blown up a big story about it. They probably aren't even aware of the joke's context or even seen the episode. All they've succeeded in doing is ensure the episode has a bigger audience when it does air here.

exactly what I was going to post.

South Parks scheme has always been to go after the taboo and sacred cows of society. Aussies are b*tching now because they dont like the cow? Too bad. If you feel you cant live with it, feel free to swim with a sting ray or two. Worked for steve.

Ha, I thought that was pretty funny.

I also thought it was kind of sensitive of the South Park guys for once.. They actually put it's too soon into the 'script', lol.

Maybe they're going soft =P

Much as I liked the guy, he's fair game with all the rest.

We could be just like the muslims who rioted over the catroon incident but we don't because we are Australian and we do things in our own way. If this really offends you, harden up.

All valid points as always.
I reckon the show is based on the premise: "nothing is sacred " therefore good or bad taste does not come into he logic of material selection for shows.
Mel, Micheal Jackson, Chef have all been done. I guess to South Park Steve was as big a celebrity as those guys.
