Ok people looking for some feedback on airlie beach and surrounding towns, we are thinking of moving there as a sea change for the family.
Anybody with any useful info.

I have not lived there, but stayed a few days on my way round Oz. Its the gateway to the Whitsundays and if you like fishing/boating its unreal. Conway National Park is also very nice.
I didn't like the town itself - it is a backpacker haven and was like Cavil Ave on the Gold Coast. The Pub was like a meat market IMHO and the locals did not come across as friendly as other towns i visited. Its got lots of blow ins with the construction game going gang busters and many work on the islands. Shopping was well priced though - cheaper than what i expected. Seems to have a good bus service. If you are looking for something more quiet, try Mission Beach.

A workmates dad lives there, he goes to visit every September with his kids and says it is one of the best places he has been to.

Been there for a holiday, and found that the scenery and the islands were fantastic, but I reckon that once you've done it all, there can't be much left to do.
Airlie Beach itself is pretty small, and I wouldn't imagine there would be too many job oportunities unless you started something up yourself.

my olds just did the sea change thing. Just sold a successful business in sydney to run a caravan park halfway between Mackay and airlie beach. They love the change. It's a risk you have to be fully prepared to take, know that by selling up for a sea/tree change thingy, you may not be able to afford to move back to the city if it doesn't work out. do your home work on the place first, even go and rent in the area for a month or so just to see the more local, less tourist side of it. some beautiful places in this country, don't rush your choice.
